I've done a lot of hunting around but cannot find any app, or discussion of any app, that shows the connection speed of any given wifi connection on the N95? For eg, I'm sure the connection speed to my wireless router is a bit slow but how can I tell if I don't know what that actual connection speed/traffic flow is like? Ideally looking for an app like netmeter/ktrafficanalyzer.

Well just to reply to my own post. I've now literally spent hours looking all over the net for such software and I can categorically state that it doesnt exist!

As suspected, the browser doesn't support the site content so loads but that's really about it. Am I seriously the only person who is looking for such an app? I thought would be in plenty supply. Certainly is for Windows Mobile

How about the opera mobile browser? I would try it, but I'm using my phone as my modem here....

Hmmn - do you have the latest Flash developers installation on your N95? You can get it at Adobe website if you sign up (needed to run FLVplayer).

I guess the 8GB N95 would be able to do this over the web on its latest firmware...

Hi,
i had the same problem on the N95 standard. i couldn't find any speed tester. But i was using ORB, and when connecting to the mycast.orb.com through my N95 and loggin in (eventually) there is a spped at the bottom. It has the option to recalculate speed. i did and got 25kbs (my WIFI should be alot more than this!!!).

After searching for ages i found the reason. settings/connections/WLAN/advanced settings. I set the thing to manual, and switched off the power saving. I then redid speed test in Orb and got 620kbs.

Thanks for that. Will look at signing up if free to check monitoring speed as I'm sure not getting full speed. Not sure about the power-saving thing as read a few threads where people have reported the phone heating up significantly. Surely, some geek has written a piece of software for this??? grr

Look under connection manager.It told me the speed for N82.So it should apply the same to you

Following on nztechfreak's idea, I hunted down 2 sites that I was able to test connection speeds with from the n95 and the results were...varying.

I'd be interested to hear your results:
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest (expect your phone's browser to appear frozen for about a minute as has java)
http://pcpitstop.com/internet/bandwidth.asp

Even then, these are international sites and I still can't truly test what I want: the connection speed between my phone and router.

You're right, switching power saving to disabled does heat up the phone some what, but considering the wifi is on its not suprising.

I will try the speed checks you mention and post my speeds. But the orb test i did is pretty good, because the when i stream i know that my download is the same as my pc's upload, as its higher.
You could just download a file from a server somewhere and calcualte the speed yourself by time taken and size of file.

No,With my N82 it showed me the download and upload speed .If you scroll down there will be a part saying speed with an upwards and a dowwards arrow measure in kb/s

Firstly, you're a legend mate. That is exactly what I was looking for. It's a real memory hog. If I leave it running for more than about 5 seconds, phone runs out of memory and closes all apps.

The other really interesting thing is that my suspicions are confirmed with download speeds. When loading web pages, in NZ and international getting modem speed rates (according to Conn. Mngr) and watching the traffic usage to download the page slowly tick by at the top of the page. Yet when running a speed test like http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest getting more reasonable speeds, but even then a maximum of 500 kbps while my laptop gets at leat 1500 kbps from the exact same position. I signed up for mycast.orb to test the speeds and again, a maximum of about 450 kbps with power-saving and then indeed with power-saving disabled, getting much better speeds, approximately 2/3 improvement.

All the pages above were done in the built-in browser. I tried loading some of the same pages in Opera-Mini and pages load heaps faster (eg. www.geekzone.co.nz). So from this limited testing, I suppose I can surmise that the built-in browser is forcing the slow connections? Compression? Dunno.

Very interesting and also very odd. Keen to hear experiences from others.

Mini Opera is heaps better than the in built browser for loading pages quickly, just try bbc.co.uk which has loadsa images. opera loads it in no time.

How come you get such good speeds (450) with power saving enabled? Mine goes up and down, as if it is about to lose connection, but then gets it again.

I dont expect the same speeds as the laptop, as I guess its one thing downloading the data, but another processing it. i dont know if the speed tests are done with or without the processing time around the download. As good as the N95 is, it wont be the same speed as the pc.

i was gonna install the torrent app for the N96 and download something and see for real what just the download speed i achieve is.
