Nokia has just released its first firmware update for the N82. I've not installed it yet but those who have report a little more available RAM after the upgrade.

The N82 features data preservation, which means you can upgrade the firmware and supposedly not lose any data or settings. Of course, it's still a good idea to back up before any upgrade like this.

Hmmm has N82 been released? I am hoping it'll get to NZ... I would like to get it because it has 5MP and Xenon flash (and GPS too right?)

It might be the phone to replace my Windows Mobile... seeing that Mail for Exchange is working pretty good and am satisfy with the result (on my partner's N95)

Yes the N82 was released in November, I picked one up in December.

It's a terrific phone, basically the same specs as the N95 but with the better flash. It's fast, battery life is impressive, and this ability to upgrade your firmware without losing your data is a really nice touch.

I personally prefer the candy-bar form factor of the N82 to the N95 slider.

Same.. I think N95 is not that great phone.. it has great many features (which I even have the slightest idea to check them all out, as I'm pretty infused with Windows Mobile devices - don't get me wrong, I was a long-time Nokia user from Nokia 252 -> 5110 -> 6210 -> 3650).

I think I'd appreciate Xenon flash and GPS and Mail for Exchange part.

So where did you get it? Is it PI?

Yes it's PI, although I hear rumours Vodafone are intending to carry it perhaps in the second half of this year. TradeMe has a couple of N82s up there last time I checked.

I am a big fan of Symbian. I enjoy using Windows Mobile on my PDA, but phones are Nokia's core business and I just feel that the Symbian products are more stable. I don't like HTC hardware and think call quality is considerably poorer than Nokia's. There are also some great third party apps for Symbian, and the SIP functionality on the newer Symbian phones is great.

I do hope to see Vodafone NZ carries this soon as I would like to try out Sky mobile tv (i know it's a bit of gimmick)

It probably won't be until Q2 in NZ I'm afraid.

I've been asking, and am currently in the process of contacting the right person in Vodafone to give me a ballpark release date (would be nice to know since WOM World is sending me an N82 to review for them), but first quarter seems unlikely.

Are you in Auckland Chiefie? I'd be happy to meet with you and show you the device in some detail in a fortnight or so when it arrives.

It really is fantastic, I had one to use for two days at Nokiaworld. The Xenon flash makes it soooo much better than the N95 in low-light/night conditions - check the comparison here.

I will definitely be buying one when it comes out in black (its unofficially confirmed that this will happen).

I'd prefer a black one but N82 will be much better than N95, I never really been that impressed with N95 to start off... I'm in Christchurch though.

Even E51 will be good as I'm statisfy with the Mail for Exchange.

I'm using a N82 at the moment.Hopefully a firmware is available soon as it still has lots of bugs.Crashes and freezing problem.I don't recommend rushing to buy N82 yet

Looks like nokia hong kong hasn't release the new firmware yet for N82..Will wait patiently...

Most users are finding the N82 very stable for a first firmware as far as N-Series phones go.

If you don't feel like waiting patiently just change your product code to enable the firmware upgrade - go to Symbian-Freak to get the codes, with a search you can find instructions either here or there for how to go about the whole process.

Chiefie are you basing your comparison with the most recent firmware N95? Its light-years better than previous versions, really feels like a new phone to be honest....

yes I know about the changing the code using nemesis suite as I did that with my N73 but i won't be doing that for my N82 because I need chinese input.I'll just wait for the new firmware but i assure you everyone selling silicon cases,chargers,batteries in hong kong are all reporting N82 freezing and crashing all the time.Pretty unstable.
It sometimes crash when your listening to music.Its quite disapointing that there's always problem when nokia releases new firmware.

The most stable symbian i've used is Nokia 6670 and 6680, N70 and N73 were pretty much unstable and slow until after a firmware upgrade

I am keen on N82 - has everything I want in a phone,.

How is it to text with? What are those keys like? I have big hands. Will I struggle with it?

I find the keys widely spaced and excellent to text with. You have to be a bit careful with the softkeys, it is a bit of an odd arrangement where for example the left softkey and the menu key are actually one button. You press the upper half for the left softkey, the lower half for the menu. But it's no big deal when you get used to it.

Contary to another contributor's experience here, I have found the phone rock solid. I install plenty of third party apps on it and it's really stable for me.
