Looks like nokia have released a new firmware version for the 6600.
The last upgrade didn't do a whole heap, but this one seems to have a number of important changes.
Summary on my site, and a more detailed list of changes here (below the Italian blurb).

So does anyone know the best place to get a phone flashed with an upgrade in Auckland, New Zealand? I tried the place down on Fanshaw street last time, but they seemed pretty clueless. I'm happy to pay for the service.

Before I go calling an anonymous number, can you tell me who that is?
Will they just tell me to bugger off unless I have a problem with the phone?

Doubt It, I asked MFR to reflash my 6600 in april and they said they did not "offer this kind of service" im not sure if they meant for a 6600 but since i spend one K for the phone I would expect some customer service, so I had to send it to Australia. Isnt that nice?

Oh godammit how stupid....!!
All I want is the fix in 5.27 so that ringtones aren't reduced in volume when you turn 'Vibrate' on.

Maybe I should buy a flashing cable from eBay and start charging people $5 for the service?!?

Just type *#0000# at the main phone screen.
The top line should say something like "V 3.42.1", meaning version 3.42, build 1.

Yeah, as far as I know the versions on most phones are 3.42 (like mine) 4.09 (like yours) and the new one (5.27).

Needless to say, I'd like to get mine a wee bit more up to date :(

Okay, I did call Mobile Fone Repair in Auckland.
Apparently they will do firmware upgrades for about $30. Takes an hour or so.

Only problem is they only have 4.09 :(

Ben,

i am thinking of getting my 6600 with gps, i see that you have 6600 with holux, how was it, are you happy? if not, what other brand would you recommend?
Thank you very much.

Yeah the holux works great for me. No problems at all.

The only watch-out is that while the holux has what looks like a USB port, if you want to use it with a cable (say connected to your laptop instead of the 6600), you need to buy a special serial cable for about US$30.

Otherwise, it worked great with the 6600 out of the box. I used PowerNavigator software from Symbianware which was also a good fit.

Not sure how the other GPS's perform, but the holux was pretty much the cheapest I could find from a reputable dealer (semsons.com).

Ben,

i ordered nokia 6620 and i am hoping getting sometime within few days, i was wondering how's speakerphone using holux gps? is it loud enough to hear them or you have addiotional hard ware? i heard you get lost connection due to tree branches blocking satelite gps? does power navigator give you voice turn by turn ?

thanks
