I am trying to upgrade my 3970 from Pocket PC2002 to 2003 and am having real problems. I get so far then I get this message.

Error 100: Incompatible Image

The ROM image that you are trying to use is not designed to work with your iPAQ Pocket PC.
These are the characteristics of your iPAQ Pocket PC:

Model; iPAQ 3900
ROM Version: 2.10
Language English

The selected image information:

Model: iPAQ 3900
ROM Version 3.00
Language English

Please check Compaq Web site and download the correct ROM upgrade.
I have downloaded and installed the most up to date ROM version I can find, V2.1
PLEASE HELP before I give my iPAQ flying lessons.

There are different ROM images depending on if you iPAQ comes with Bluetooth or not. Have you got this ROM image from HP? You might have to contact them to get the correct one.

The upgrade from 2002 to 2003 is done by applying a ROM image that is sold by HP. This update is not available for download. If you try to apply an update to 2003 over an old 2002 it will not work...

I bought the Pocket PC 2003 upgrade for the 3900 series. I thought that meant I could upgrade from 2002 to 2003

That is ok then but you should use the one for your specific model

The version I have is meant to be for the 39XX model. I think I will have to stick to 2002

You can contact HP then. If you have a h3970 or h3950 you'll need a version for one of these models (different versions, h3970 comes with Bluetooth). HP should be able to flash the device for you.
