Hi all,

i want to know if there is some nz mapping software similar to this article:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=832

i see livingstone guides are no more. what is the alternative? i have a ipaq 4150 with a garmin gps. I had a look on handgo and found this map:
http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1204&jid=FX5446D97BA127178D9CF4BDCFCX7C83&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=83685§ionId=0&catalog=30&topSectionId=-1
for this software:
http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1204&jid=FX5446D97BA127178D9CF4BDCFCX7C83&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=34138§ionId=0&catalog=30&topSectionId=-1

im wondering if this will work like the above article or what are the alternatives? if there are any?! cause i had a look on the net and the websites i did find were not very helpful.

thanks.

Vito Technology creates some good mapping software - but the map you found is of a scale that will not make it usable for in car navigation or street use... It's a shame Livingstone doesn't exist anymore, because that was a truly good map.

thanks for the reply. would i somehow be able to get a copy of livingstone guides of the guy that did the article? as the company is no longer i guess there is no one to hold copyright of the software?

i am probably completely wrong as i have no legal skills but might be worth some discussion :P

I'm not sure how software licensing works. The Livingstone Guides work only with Pocket PC OS and Pocket PC OS 2002. It will not even install on Windows Mobile 2003 devices. It has no more use to me, but we'd have to find how this works.

ahh i see.

if it doesnt work on ppc 2k3 then theres no point hehe. i have an old jornada 545 but no gps with it.

i came across this site the other day in my nz ppc mapping software search:

http://www.wherearewe.co.nz/pocketwaw.html

it certianly doesnt look as cool though. has anyone use this program?

it needs a GSM connection to query its server though. so its not what im looking for. seems to get all the mapping data off a server (costly i can imagine - but cool none-the-less)

It doesn't need the connection all the time. I read through the site and it says there's an option to save maps locally when connected via ActiveSync.

Hi,

I've heard of people who are into GIS using ArcPad which is a pocket pc client for GIS. As far as I am aware you can use it as a standalone product, and it can integrate with GPS as well. You can download a free evaluation version, which works in 20 minute intervals but doesn't have any further constraints (i.e., it will work forever but for no more than 20 min at a time!). You can find out about it and download it here: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcpad/index.html

Good luck
Megan
