I've been working on setting up the GPS and garmin xt on my n95 8gb firmware v20.

The software GMXT is working good, it recognises my inbuilt gps and everything and i can see my car moving on the road, so all good.

But how do I load the maps onto my phone? I downloaded map installer from http://gwprojects.org/public/Latest%20Global%20Indexing%20Mapsets/

and in my computer c:\program files - Mapcenter - there are image files and .zip files. But I have no idea how can I load so called free nz gwproject maps onto my phone.

Get the MapSource software. It will see the maps and let you select what you want to install.

I've just been through the process myself, and once I got MapSource all went well from there (thanks to the members here that helped).

Try this, if you have any troubles the Open GPS forums are a wealth of knowledge for anything related to GPS

1. First install the Garmin Training Center software: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collecti ... 9-99999-04
2. Now that the directory is there install the MapSource update: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download ... jsp?id=209

Thanks! it worked. Now i can search hotels, hospitals etc on my phone. BUT cannot search for streets. Where it says "address search" "in which country is the address" i put new zealand, nothing happened. There is only one country name "Il4" whats that?

This may be a silly question...

But why Garmin XT over Nokia Maps?

I've been using Maps 2.0 for a few weeks now and found it to be terrific.... I paid NZ$160 for a years voice guided navigation and it included OZ I found out!

I found that garmin xt is more professional. and since the free maps can only be used with garmin xt sofware i think.

Because although Nokia maps is now quite good, its still nowhere near as good as Garmin (which you could have got for cheaper than a years guidance on Nokia maps, and there are no futher costs with Garmin - its also loaded on a MicroSD card so is portable to your next handset).

Garmin has perfect street level detail, but also has >9000 points of interest, which makes it better than Nokia's offering (along with a few other nice improvements). I've used both extensively (got three months free license with Nokia maps on purchasing my Black N82), and Garmin is certainly the better of the two.

Couple of things.....

Maps is transportable also... the license is to the SIM card not the IMEI number... Maps has over 32,000 POI

I might have to give the Garmin option a go also... see what the dealio is :)

How much are the maps on XT for the likes of Europe/USA?

32K POI's? I think Nokia are quoting on street numbers when they say that, its POI detail is far, far outstripped by Garmins I'm afraid.

In order to get street searching on MobileXT, you need to download the map from here, http://www.gwprojects.org/public/Latest%20Global%20Indexing%20Mapsets/ not the one from Mapcentre.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

My main motivation for getting Garmin XT over using the inbuilt maps is the lack of some finer street detail in the area I live. Never really played with it around the bigger cities, but got Garmin XT to be able to have good total coverage. Also found the free maps available online to have some more up to date data than the Nokia ones.

Just got back from a weekend trip and found the XT software to work damn well. It had some limitations in it's ability that I assume are linked to it's attempting to keep your navigated location to be on a road and compensating for low accuracy on gps position, causing it to sometimes mark me on a parallel or converging road. Still did better than the Nokia maps did at working out my location accuratly. And had considerably more POI's preloaded than the Nokie maps also, atleast around where I was.

All-in-all the XT software just worked better for me and what I wanted to do.

If you go to Settings then Maps then scroll down to Show Location you have the options to either show location on road or at gps.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Yes I downloaded maps from there and installed on my computer. But how do I then load it onto my phone? In the programs folder there is no application or anything. Went in the Program Files, opened the folder "NZ Open Autorouting GPS Project" where I installed the mapset from gwproject website, and found many image files for eg, 64000012, 64000013, 64000014 etc etc. What do I do with them?

Just checked Garmin folder in E:\ in the memory card and found those img files there.

My GarminXT searches "Food,hotels,accomodation, petrol stations" etc etc and comes up with locations and directions.
But only when I go to the street search, it first asks "what country" and NZ is not there.

I can search for shop names and set the route and it will direct me to it with the most detail map info. But I still dont know how to enable the street searching. I am using the maps from GWPROJECT but still no luck.

When asks for "country" there is only one "I14" or something like that.

Please help.

I can also search for streets on mapsource on my computer. I loaded the same maps onto the memorycard but garminXT wont search for streets. :(

The raw IMG files that the gwprojects install places into your computer are not the same files that end up on your phone as such. The MapSource software, if told to include specific maps recompiles the data from all those maps into GMAPSUPP.IMG (or so I understand, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

In my case, I included all the map data from from gwprojects (not just selected areas) and told it to add them to my phone. It did it without issue and all my local bits and pieces show fine through every search path I've tried. New Zealand also shows as the default for country when searching for address and I have to spell other countries for international searches.

If you're getting something like "I14" as a country my guess would be that something is installed incorrectly or corrupted, It may pay to clear it all off and try installing from scratch again.

And as I mentioned, having the IMG files from gwproject in the Garmin folder isnt the way my setup shows (infact trying to put them in there initially before I got MapSource setup didnt do anything for me), so if they are in there as individual files then that would indicate to me that something in the process has not gone as it should.
