For some time I had been trying to determine whether the Palm OS could be used with the Remote Desktop communication accessory in Windows XP Professional. I have an XP machine with a static IP address and want to use some kind of Palm based unit (such as a Sony UX 50) to access it. Mauricio Freitas at geekzone points out that there is a Palm version VNC available on the internet that will act as the client piece for the XP host. He recommended this posting so others might comment. I would be interested in any observations anyone might have and also suggestions for very portable hardware that could be used. Has anyone tried this, and, if so, with what results?

I've been using PalmVNC to control my XP box (and an iMac for that matter) via Bluetooth on my LAN at home. It should be possible to do the same from outside with port forwarding 5900 to teh IP address of your machine after the router. If your machine has a static IP address without a router, it should be even easier. Just have to negotiate your firewall, and get your Palm onto the internet..

i've tried this from outside, but haven't managed to get past the firewalls at the office and University. Suspect port 5900 is blocked both ways.. Haven't tried it from a direct connection via GPRS. Maybe I will tonight.
