N95 8Gb and Xnet Voip

I am looking at getting one of these phones at some point in the near future, there are two things I need to know.
Will the phone work on the new Telecom Network that is coming out next year? As far as I am aware the network is going to be WCDMA/UMTS 850? Im not totally sure what all these different 4/5 letter acronyms mean. But from doing my research the latest version of the 8Gb N95 supports 850/1900mhz WCDMA?

The other question I have is can I use this phone through my wireless connection at home as a standalone Voip phone that will work with my Xnet Fusion. i.e Will I be able to make calls from my N95 that will go through my wireless connection and through my network and out to Xnet just the same as a Wired VOIP phone would on my LAN (local calls from my house from my N95 would then be free). And would calls made to my home through the fusion service be able to be picked up on the N95?

The N95 8GB does not do 850 3G in NZ. There is a US spec that will do 850/1900 3G. So problem straight away:
- You could get the NZ spec, but it will only work on Telecom in the main centres on 2100 3G.
- Or get the US spec, but it would only work in the rural areas where Telecom deploy 850 3G.

As for VFX over the N95, you can only do this if you set up an Asterisk box, else use 2talk.

I dont think you can use wireless for Voip on Xnet

How are you suppose to connect the N95 to Xnet Voip when you need a PAP2T device thats plugged into your existing modem?

The PAP2t then allows you to plug a normal telephone using a telephone line.It doesn't have wireless...So...No idea how you can set that up

That's interesting. So it will be duel band 2100/850 in the city centres?

Im not using a PAP2T im using a WAG54GP that sits between my adsl connection and my server, so generally speaking any traffic that leaves my network goes through this device. And so I would expect that SIP traffic can hit this device and be dealt with accordingly on the VFX service. Whether it be from a wireless device on my LAN or a wired phone on my LAN. I havnt actually read into whether this is possible or not, and whether the WAG54 can only do VOIP on the RJ11 ports or not.

Correct. And if you are in a contract when the new network comes live you get a free handset - not sure what model, wouldn't expect much but it's something to help people move on.

Sweet, how exciting, this change is something I thought would never happen, I cant wait to get a sweet new phone and move away from the super average selection we have been stuck with for sooo long.

Regular VFX is tied to an actual (approved) device & is locked down. There is no way to simply connect some random device and make it work.
You can however get VFX on Asterisk, this will enable you to use your N95 over VFX.

Just to clarify - Asterisk is a open source linux PBX - its not that hard to setup but it does require a server to be running 24/7
