I have a iPAQ 4150. I just set up a wireless network at home, and it is working OK between my two desktops. The iPAQ detects the network and is connected to it. But I cannot use the internet explorer. What do I do next?

From your router can you see the iPAQ is connected? If yes, then try running the program welcome.exe, located on your Pocket PC's \Windows folder. Soft reset and try connecting again.

If it doesn't work, then you'll probably need to download a utility like VxUtil, so you can check that you have the proper configuration - IP, DNS, etc on your Pocket PC.

I managed to download the utility, but I have no idea what to do with it. What do I need to check and how?

I had several occurrences of this that turned out to be some kind of random fault - a soft reset fixed the problem each time.

Also try turning all your security settings on the router to off, and see if that makes a difference - dont forget to get the security back on asap though. If you can connect by doing this, then we may be able to help you trhough the right settings.

Expat, have you tried the welcome.exe program yet? Have you checked on your router that this Pocket PC is indeed connected?

For VxUtil, install it on your Pocket PC, and run it. Use PING to reach a known site - for example www.wired.com and then try doing it by IP address (www.wired.com is 209.202.221.21). If it works for IP address but not by name, then you'll have to check the DNS configuration on your Pocket PC. It should be receiving this from your router.

If none of the PING results are ok, then you have to follow disenchanted suggestions.

I tried the welcome.exe and the reset - no change.

I am not sure how to check the home networking modem. But I have a utility that came with it for the set up. Under the "devices" tab, I can see both my desktops, with their IP addresses, but not the iPAQ. So maybe it has not actually made a connection.

How do I ping? Do I write the address into the "host" box and tap "ping"?

Thanks.

Julian

For our information, what wireless access point are you using? Make and model. That information may help others help you...

For help configuring and using 802.11b wireless on your iPAQ 4150 device look at this document from HP...

http://h200001.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00157709/c00157709.pdf

If your access point is NOT broadcasting the SSID then you need to manually configure that, otherwise make sure the WEP/WPA key (whatever your using) matches on both the iPAQ and the access point. Use a HEX key representation on the iPAQ versus a pass phrase if your using WEP... Here is an on-line key convertor/generator...

http://www.warewolflabs.com/portfolio/programming/wepskg/wepskg.html

As noted by Disenchanted you might turn off WEP/WPA on the access point temporarily to troubleshoot.

If your iPAQ is connected to the access point you should be receiving an IP address in the 192.168.X.X range and NOT in the 169.X.X.X range.

To use ping on the iPAQ, open vxUtil and tap either the small double tennis racket icon at the bottom of the screen or go to Functions | Ping. Enter either a local LAN IP address or the NetBIOS name of the PC and tap Ping.

You should get no errors. If you can't do that check your wireless encryption setup for the correct SSID and WEP/WPA key.

Look at this page for help setting up the Windows Mobile 2003 Connection Manager. I recommend setting this up as illustrated for all Work.

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/WM2003/Connection_Manager/ConnectionManager.html

Other items to note are to check if you configured MAC Address Authentication on the access point. If so, then you need to add the iPAQ's address to the authorized access list.

I just got it to work!! But I am not 100% sure how!

I went to the connections>advanced>network card>network adapters>use server-assigned IP address. Unlike before, this time it gave an address (192.168.2.11) which was the same as the one being used by my second desktop yesterday. Then I reset the iPAQ and tried internet explorer again, and it worked - I could read web pages.

In the modem utility, I see the iPAQ has turned up under devices as: host name "unknown", device name "unknown". How can I name it?

I turned on the second desktop and it has a newnumber: 192.168.2.12. That is also working OK.

Re the rest of the message
- Thanks for the HP manual.
- Access point = Efficient Networks Speedstream 6300 Wireless DSL gateway.
- I do not see a network indicator icon on the start bar, only the connections icon.
- The SSID was detected automatically by the iPAQ.
- The WEP HEX security key was no problem. It works when I enter the right one and it gives an error message if I enter anything else.
- I am not sure how to set up the IP address and the other settings (TCP/IP, DNS, ISP) but I seem to have it working by chance!
- I did not try to ping again, or the setup under work.

Where can I find instructions for how to setup to send email wirelessly & to syncronise wirelessly??

Providing you have your Connection Manager configured correctly, look at this page for help with wireless ActiveSync on your home LAN...

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/WM2003/ActiveSync/WM2003ActiveSyncConfiguration.html

To send/receive email wirelessly, ie. not via ActiveSync, open Inbox on your PocketPC and tap Tools | Options | Accounts | New. Configure just like you would your desktop PC with the appropriate settings for your ISPs mail server.

OK. Internet explorer is working fine now. If I have a problem with email or active synch, I shall start a different thread.

Many thanks to those who have sent help. I appreciate it.

Julian

p.s. I called HP helpdesk first - they told me to come here !!
