Following on from the above article.... sad to say that the retail outlets for these are not up to speed knowledge wise...
Telecom's online list of mobile phones states this is WAP capable - I was told at time of purchase that ithe Harrier is not. And that to access email I must use a web-based mail account via a data plan.

My old 027 phone was able to access my xtra email a/c without going to webmail server - can I not set my new Harrier up somehow to do exactly the same?? I am not want expensive data costs.

Really look forward to replies on this.
Cheers

The Pocket Internet Explorer is a WAP browser, and should work fine with most WAP sites.

For e-mail access, just configure the Inbox with your account details. Telecom NZ allows access to most pop servers outside their network (I'm using it with a Paradise account). However for sending e-mail if you don't have a Xtra account you'll need a third party service (like smtp.com since most ISP block their smtp server from being accessed from other networks.

Iv noticed something in the Harrier that is likely to cause confusion...

Normally Pocket Outlook has the 'activesync' account in account which of course is your email synced through activesync - On the Harrier its called "Outlook Email" or something.

Harrier users - be aware that you CAN use normal pop email simply by creating a new account and setting it up like usual - You will not have full email functionality with the default configuration on the Harrier.

The activesync or "Outlook Email" version will have less functionality compared with a true pop account setup.

For those that do not use Xtra as their email provider, I suggest using 'secure mail' which most kiwi ISPs provide.

Ihug provide secure email for free
Xtra provide secure email (setup fee included)

Also - another little quirk to note with the Harrier is that the "1X" or "EV" logo at the top actually covers the "Calls" icon which would normally allow you to view your missed/received calls etc.

Thanks for that Slippers.
I have actually created a pop3 for my xtra account - as email has just sat in the Outbox of the default 'Online Email' connection and I still have mail sitting in there from days ago that wont send.

I'm a really sorry unit right now......sad to say - that I got my Harrier on 8th November and it has now gone back to Telecom
I have had screen freezes most days and had to do soft resets to get it working again - and today it wouldnt turn on at all. Telecom tried soft resets and taking the battery out to no avail. Thank heavens I still have my old 027 phone with numbers loaded as I am back using that. *Sob Cant wait for Monday to see if I can get it back.... and sorted!

Thats no good!

You mentioned that your email wont clear from your outbox - thats exactly what Im talking about in my post above. I think ull find that uncleared email is in the outbox of your activesync account rather than your pop account. You will have to re-compose and re-send using the pop account.

Yes thats what I ended up doing .... so that when I go into Messaging now.. there is the original Online Email, POP3, and TXT accounts. Any point in keeping the Online Email one there???

Also ... I didnt appear to be able to txt to an email address, which I could do with 027 phone. Is there a step I am missing on the Harrier that allows this still ... or is it a feature no longer available on new phone?

* wonders if Mauricio is able to cut this whole Harrier thread over to 3G discussion area.

Cheers

AKG, this thread seems related to Pocket PC Phone Edition - I'll leave it here for now.

Regarding the e-mail, when you create an e-mail on the Harrier you have to tap the Send & Receive icon to actually connect and send the e-mail. This is to avoid the Pocket PC connecting just for one e-mail. You can create multiple and then tap the icon (the last one in the Inbox toolbar). This will connect and send all. Once sent, these e-mails are moved to Sent.

Of course, if you create an e-mail and select ActiveSync as the tranport (that is using the ActiveSync default account), then the e-mail will only be sent next time you place the Harrier in the cradle.

Slippers, what is the 'secure email' you refer to above - how is it different from 'normal' email?
