Hi

I've been using my Samsung i325 for some time now and have been looking forward to the additional features that the 6.1 upgrade provides ( I realise the GPS function does not function in NZ) The upgrade has recently been posted on the Samsung US site.

However Telecom told me yesterday that they will not support and will not release the 6.1 upgrade for HTC or Samsung and in fact if I installed it (apparently it does work) my warranty will be voided and it is not possible to revert back to 6.0 that originally came with the phone.

They also told me that I will be recieiving a voucher for a new phone upgrade at some point due to their impending change in network. In my view this approach (voiding the warrantly) is a little heavy handed as was the "FUD" from Telecom if I did upgrade it myself.

I was wondering if anyone had had a similar experience or actually tried out the upgreade

seriously am surprised as it is available from samsung? Sorry don't own one can't help you and not about to get one either.

Edit: the link above gives you the download of the official upgrade (so why oh why Telecom won't support that)

Upgrades are not free for the manufacturer or distributor. As for "voiding the warranty" they are right in some sense. A lot of people have no idea of what they are doing if they get a "cooked" ROM - and if they brick the device there's a cost to repair it - it takes the technician time to reload the OS, test it, etc - so it's not a free ride.

I'd check and see if samsung has a version of wm6 for your phone on their site. Or Telecom even... I know they had the original rom for my HTC so if I ever have any dramas with my 6.1 I could flash back to 5. Never gunna happen tho. 6.1 is HEAPS better than what comes stock on my phone!

I don't think you will find anything from Samsung - this is a CDMA phone so it's customised by the operators.

By the way the free phone offer you mention in the first post - Telecom will provide a WCDMA phone to any user with an active contract when the new network comes live next year, according to what they said during the press conference call.

So if you're willing to go without the warranty, anyone gutsy enough to load the Sprint firmware and see if it works on Telecom???

unless you find a specific ROM pack for the 325i it will not work, the ROM packs for the HTC touch & Titan were due to the fact that other Teleco's made available upgrades, these required that for a telecom device you had to extract certain information before attempting the update, even then it was not the easiest of jobs. Telecom are putting nearly all the resourses for WCDMA 850, I have had a play with some of the new 850 devices and I am looking forward to June when I can replace my titan

This comment alone (which is true) should really make you worry about upgrading. The upgrade above is only for sprint users hence should really not be followed by Telecom customers. unless one can get hold of a kitchen and mix and match the bits and pieces to make it work (hence a cooked ROM).

Yeah but "customised" often just means skins, web home pages, default data service configuration, etc - all of which can be changed through a few registry edits. So if the Sprint WM 6.1 for the i325 will work on the Telecom network then the other stuff is not a problem.
