The N95 is currently on special for less than $600. I currently have a Nokia 6121 Classic, which is a great little phone, and am thinking about upgrading to the N95. Main reasons would be:

Better camera
Larger screen
Built in GPS

Drawbacks that I can see so far include:

Battery life
Lack of 900 MHz WCDMA

Any thoughts / advice would be appreciated. My other upgrade path could be the E71 as I find myself using my phone for email much more now that the Gmail Symbian client has improved.

$600 is pretty good for an N95, I'd do it (unless you can wait for the 5800 to drop in price, Nokia are planning on selling it for $270 euros + whatever taxes/duties the particular country of sale has, but that won't be until early next year...)

It Vodafone selling it for $600?

Yes, and all the major retailers. I think JB have it for $584.

Nokia e71 is a nice device. I would buy that over the n95

Yes dropped to $600 due to impending N96 push and the fact N95 8GB is around.

It's a superb phone for the price but two things, The lack of 900Mhz WCDMA and the keypad is a bit stiff dpending on your preference (I would have much perferred a soft-touch keypad and would have been a far better design) also it's getting a little older now but not saying this is anything bad.

E71 would be my other choice and looks stunning and has much better battery life but bear in mind it's ALL battery and quite heavy as a result

If you do lots of text-entry or are a "road warrior" then the E71 would be a better choice (ease of input/900MHz) having used one of those keyboard format format phones a fair bit for work.

I just picked up another n95 on friday and am quite enjoying having it again.

For me I wanted in this order Camera, Video, Gps, SIP client, Large display, Loud speakers, and Video-out (blowing up the maps onto a 7" screen in the car works great!) robustness and standard USB connector (I HATE these new mini usb connectors) so the choice for me was another N95

Otherwise an E71 would have been it.

It dropped because its a Christmas offering from Vodafone, just as Telecom have the 6275 at $249. These prices have NOTHING to do with whats currently in market.

It is essentially very close to end of it's life. Yes Vodafone have given us a bit of an early present though with an early price drop..

OT: is there any way of getting rid of that horrible mandatory giant animated gif screensaver which slaughters my battery and makes standby applications run very slow as it enters standby? Without hacking? I could reflash but worried with warranty and I killed my e50 instantly when I tried the product code reflash trick..

Yes, I think it's worth it. I was thinking of grabbing one myself when I saw the price drop. However, I just got a Nokia 6500 Slide a few weeks ago - it had a price drop also.

Supposedly, one can take the higher capacity battery from the N95-8GB and use it in the N95.

I suspect the N95 is going to be phased out very soon. Hence the price drop. I know that the 6500 Slide has just been discontinued. So, all the retailers are trying to get rid of stock.

Turn off the animation in Themes :)

Tools>Settings>General>Personalisation>Themes>Power Saver

Read a couple of posts above, neither handset is EOL, this is mearly an Xmas special. :)

The 6500s is still available just back at $649 :)

Correct, you can use the 1200mA 8GB battery in the N95-1. It involves sanding the inside of the battery cover down though, you can find out how by searching n95users.com, theres a post or two there about it.

Might be a bit drastic for most with their brand new $600 phone though...

ooh, if it's just a matter of sanding down the battery cover I might look at grabbing one of the bigger batteries.
I had heard you can do it with removing it and putting on a crystal case but I thought that was really a bit crude. I am wondering if I could fit the entire frame from an N95 8GB on the classic?, i'd need a new LED flash board and would lose my "nessesary" lens cover but it's quite possible I think out of interest.
Friend whom has 8Gb has already placed a scratch on the exposed camera window... bah! lol..
