Hi,

For HP iPaq h5550, I got a jacket to give PCMCIA functionality.

I next got a 027 EVDO card.

I can't get them to work. can someone walk me through what to do start 2 finish?

Excuse me the question, but does it come with Windows Mobile drivers? I don't think these cards are natively supported.

Hi,

ahhh....I see.

The outside of the Sierra Wiless Aircard 580 box says "Next generation high-speed mobile data access for your PDA or Laptop"

but once you break into the box and look at the instructions it says

"Warning: This card is not desgined to function with Windows CD, nor in handhelds and Pocket PCs".

The Sierra Wiless instructions don't refer to PDA anywhere except the disclaimer. The 1-page Telecom printed A4 instructions refer to using the card in a Laptop.

In a rush, I now have in front of me a GTRAN CDMA1x card AND the PCMCIA EVDO Sierra Wiless Aircard 580 (both working fine as a data connectivity card on other laptops).

Ideally I get the EVDO card working, GTRAN is second choice.

Er,

""Warning: This card is not desgined to function with Windows CD, nor in handhelds and Pocket PCs"

should read:

"Warning: This card is not desgined to function with Windows CE, nor in handhelds and Pocket PCs".

Are you talking about this card?

It says:

"The Mobile Broadband data card is a type II PCMCIA modem card that fits most major Laptops and PDAs. It accesses the Internet via our 027 (CDMA) network at two different speeds, based on where you are in our extensive 027 network.

In Mobile Broadband coverage areas you can work remotely with average download speeds of around 300 - 500Kbps, peaking at a huge 2Mbps.

In other 027 coverage areas you'll be able to work remotely at average speeds around 40 - 80Kbps, peaking at 153Kbps, faster than dial up and still faster than any other Mobile Data network in New Zealand."

Bold bits are mine. So, if this is not true, contact Telecom to have the correct drivers.

Oh yeah, that's the puppy.

I'm posting on this forum because Telecom Service sends me to the Telecom.co.nz website, where I can't find drivers. I've burnt a cellphone battery dry bouncing around talking to Telecom.

My fallback to the other option (GTRAN PCMCIA CDMA 1x) is less favourable, but if you search for GTRAN on the Telecom website there are no matches.

If you navigate to the Telecom mobile data page to locate the Gtran CDMA1x card, it's not listed: http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,3900,202600-201926,00.html

The evdo card on the Telecom website has no information around drivers.

I've found a link at http://www.pccard.co.nz/tech/support.asp to a page on the Telecom website here: http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,3900,202143-202780,00.html#software but I'm really unsure this is what I need. Or not.

My local dealer refers to the documentation.

I'm in a loop but I'm sure the answer is out there ... . . . ...

The Sierra 580 card uses a CardBus interface architecture. The CardBus interface is NOT compatible with the PocketPC platform.

Yes, the Telecom website.....the box for the evdo card (etc etc) all talk about "PDA" but THERE ARE NO PDA DRIVERS for the card.

How you can have EVDO speed with a PDA and a PCMCIA EVDO card beats the hell outta me.

There are drivers for the GTRAN CDMA1x card but if you want the latest drivers, don't go to the GTRAN site, call APT (www.pccard.co.nz) in Wellington.

Looks like a CDMA1x solution "might" work, will try atleast

Of course using CDMA 1xRTT you'll only have speeds up to 100~120Kbps instead of 500 ~ 650Kbps of CDMA EV-DO.

Even though the front of the AirCard 580 box mentions PDA support if you read the back of the box under System Requirements it only mentions support for:

'Windows 98Se, ME, 2000, XP - Type II PC card slot (CardBus).'

Both the Gtran GPC3000 and Sierra Wireless AirCard 555 1xRTT cards support Pocket PC.

What about the EV-DO Gtran Card?? That supports CE/Windows Mobile.. Needs to pass PTC first tho... I hear it might be out early next year. Will also have SMS support.

There are currently no PocketPC drivers for the Gtran EVDO card. When or if they appear they will be tested. SMS support will be included in the next generation Watcher for the Sierra AirCard 580 which will be early next year.
