I wanted an E51 with a camera (the NZ ones don't have one), so i purchased one from Australia, should be here next week.  I assume it'll be loaded with either Telstra firmware or some other vendor firmware.

Is the Vodafone firmware available to flash onto it? (me taking the liability etc etc)

If not what's the best approach to make the most out of it?

A bit new to all this side of things.

Yeah man it's a piece of cake.  - Just get the phone, install nokia data suite/software update- Then get a hold of software called NSS or nemesis service suite.  In this you can change your phones product code to either NZ branded  or preferably one of the EURO/UK generic codes, as these are the first to get firmware updates - you can find these in google, eg 'Nokia E51 generic product codes'- Run nokia software update and that will flash your phone with the newest version for your chosen code.  Which is easy as, and carrys no more risk than normally updating the software yourself.  Only thing is, the software updater transmits your IMEI and product code to Nokia which they log in case of a warranty claim.
There is alot of information out there on it, try googling symbian-guru, nokiaadicts.com, allaboutsymbian etc

I'd start by doing some reading. One thing to be very wary of if the fact there are two different E51 models as you know - I'd guess both use different firmware and have different product codes.

Try and reflash your phone with the incorrect software and you do stand a chance of bricking it.

Depending on where you are buying the phone from it may be a stock standard Nokia branded handset. Not everything in Australia has operator firmware.

thanks guys.  I've been on Telecom for yonks (and probably likely to go back to them once NextGen network live and going), so this is all new to me.  Some good thoughts there on where to start looking, which is essentially what i wanted more than anything.

The only features I guess i'd miss out on is some of the Live stuff (Sky Sport mobile etc).

Will do some reading, and check out stuff.  More than aware of getting the right firmware, but thanks for the reminder.

Do be warned that while it usually works, ensure you change your product code to something that is certain. I bricked my e50 by flashing it with wrong firmware then realized product code was wrong.
