Hello again...

I'm waiting for my 3650 to ship and I've been contemplating putting my Sony Clie t615 up for sale. Has anyone made the move from a pda to the phone? How are the PIM functions on this phone? Would it make for a decent pda? I already have another older handheld pc (HP Jornada 690) that I use mainly for my writing so I don't want to carry around too much stuff.

I've had my 3650 for a few months now, and I have almost completely retired my PDA, but one thing I wish the PC Suite and the 3650 could do is synchronize Notes with Outlook Explorer. I have been able to manually transfer them from my PC to the 3650, but I miss that convenient sync capability. I used my PDA a lot to make and keep notes. The 3650 will create notes independently, but entering them with the 3650 keyboard isn't as convenient as using Graffiti on the PDA.

Personally, I have found Symbian to be quite rudimentry compared to PalmOS. The main problem for me is that there is no general search feature in Symbian; I love being able to hit the 'find' button on my Palm and have it search for a string in the address book, date book, to do list, notepad and email client. However, if you only need basic PDA functionality, then a Symbian device should be fine.

I would have to disagree with the previous poster regarding text input. I find graffiti and the onscreen keyboard extremely frustrating to use, whereas T9 keypad input is tolerable IMO. Of course, it all comes down to personal preference. I'm looking forward to the day when I can afford a Palm Tungsten C so that I can have a full QWERTY keyboard right in front of me.

Hello :)

While I love my Nokia 3650, I just oculdn't commit to using it as my sole pda as well. While I did sell my Clie, about a week later, I picked up a refurb Pocket PC. I think what spurred me was a financial program I bought for the Nokia. It was cheap, so I didn't expect much bells and whistles. For a little while, it did the job until I noticed my transactions started to disappear (yes, I saved them)! The next day I got an Audiovox Maestro off of Ebay.

I stilll use some of the programs (mainly Avantgo and Worldmate) on the Nokia.

My $0.02... I've a Nokia 3650 and a Pocket PC H3970.

I decided not to move to a single device because I think the functionality is there, but the input methods are still terrible. Perhaps I should think of a Sony Ericsson P800, to have both worlds.

One thing that makes me decide which mobile phone to get is Bluetooth. If I have to keep a Pocket PC (or Palm, which I have had before) I need a mobile phone with Bluetooth, so I can connect using my PDA.

I synchronise my Nokia with my desktop, and this with my Pocket PC. All my data is replicated through these three devices. This means I can leave the Pocket PC behind when going out for a function or party, but still have my contacts and calendar with me on my mobile phone - this is the best functionality I see.

The second best thing on these phones is an e-mail client. I like to be able to check my e-mails, but I don't even try replying them using a mobile's keypad. For this I'll use my Pocket PC (if I have it with me) or go to a internet cafe.

Hello, hello

Freittasm, you mentioned your Pocket PC--do you use the internet connecting it to your Nokia?

I tired doing so yesterday and didn't know which to choose in 'Connections' Modem or IR. Also, how do you get it to just use your minutes for connecting to the internet instead of gprs. I've spoken to my carrier (TMobile) but didn't get too far. Are the settings difficult for gprs?

Hi,
for my bits worth as well, I've had a Nokia 3650 for a few months now and am trying to move solely to it from my trusty 4 year old Palm V.

My circumstances might be a little different but I find as I work on a laptop almost constantly I really only use the PDA (hopefully replace that with 3650!) when I'm out and about to confirm an address or meeting time.

On the topic of connectivity, I've had a fair amount of success, but am having difficulties which I'll put in a separate post.

Cheers,
Cleve.

Candygogo, I'm sorry I completely missed this post of yours and never replied... Have a look in our Bluetooth Guides for instructions on connecting the Pocket PC to the Nokia 3650 (or any Bluetooth phone really).

Also, I now have a Sony Ericsson P800 as well (courtesy of Vodafone NZ), so I can test some more Symbian stuff on this other platform .

The bluetooth guide, does it also show you how to connect using your minutes on the cell phone, rather than gprs? I remember looking at the guide for connecting the 3650 to the desktop computer but only seeing gprs connections.

So, how is that P800? Does it have more functions than the 3650? Would you recommend it over the 3650?

The connection is the same for GPRS and HCSD. Instead of *99... use a phone number to an ISP and it will work.

The P800 is really nice. In terms of features the touch screen is the best one. I always had a H3970 with me so I could read and reply e-mails. This is the only problem with the 3650: typing long e-mails is not an easy option (for me, I know some people that would do it without a problem).

The problem with the P800 is the Sony Memory Stick - small capacity and more expensive.

What is the text input method on the P800?

Personally, thus far, I have found the good old T9 input to be the most efficient input method. I can't use a QWERTY keyboard, such as the one found on the Palm Tungsten C, because the keys are too small and I have never been able to use Palm's Graffiti input because I find that the accuracy is terrible when using it at reasonably high speeds.

T9 takes a bit of getting used to, but once you've adjusted, it's fast and accurate. I'm curious as to what others think about this one.

When using the touch screen it's similar to Jot - Graffitti 2, with a soft keyboard if needed. But there's T9 available when using the keypad.

Mind you the keypad can be removed, making the phone look much better than with it.

I'm impressed that the software on this phone allows synchronisation of e-mails from Outlook too, not only contacts and calendar. The Nokia 3650 sync everything but e-mails.

Another big difference from this one to the Nokia 3650 is the cradle - the Nokia only syncs over Bluetooth or cable (sold separately). The P800 comes with a cradle. Of course I'm using Bluetooth only.

Actually today was the first time since 1996 that I left home without a Palm or Pocket PC. Decided to rely on the phone only. Worked so far but I'm missing three things:

- Avantgo
- A decent RSS feedreader
- eWallet... I have everything on that program!

Cool. I recently dropped my Palm m125 in favour of using my T610 exclusively, because I currently only need very basic PDA functionality.

I would have loved to have bought a P800 but I want to be able to replace my existing digital camera and portable audio player and the P800 isn't quite powerful enough to do that. What I really need is a device with:
- 2 megapixel camera with flash and digital zoom (I'm sure this sort of functionality is not far away).
- Audio playback in AAC format (this probably can already be done with suitable software).
- Affordable flash memory (this might be wishful thinking).

Hopefully the successor to the P800 will offer what I need. I daresay that there is also a good chance that the new PalmOne will have something in the pipeline.

For now, aside from the fact that the software is a bit shakey, I'm pretty happy with the T610. However, one thing is for sure: I never again want to put up with the hassle of carrying two seperate devices.
