Hi All,

I have a shiny new E51 which is working well with my 2talk and IMAP idle from Google apps mail. I have a couple of questions however:

1. At home the wifi is active on the e51 for the 2talk line. If I want push email however, I have specified Vodafone as the default access point so I end up with both wifi and 3g connections active while at home. This seems like a waste of (not much) bandwidth but also battery life. I have tried smartconnect which is licenced by Nokia for the e series. This prioritises access points. However it breaks the 2talk connection when I set it up. Has anyone had any success using VOIP with SmartConnect? Are there any other options apart from manually changing the access point every time I leave the house and arrive home?

2. How much battery life does an "always on" 3g connection use?

3. The e51 is a vodafone branded handset and has firmware 201.34.38. I see the latest firmware is 201.34.56. Is there any point in going through the drama of "genericing" (is that a word!) my phone and upgrading to this firmware? It is not available for the Vodafone NZ version yet.

Cheers,

Matt.

hey fella,
mine is at 300.34.56, web browsing seems better and feeds work more reliably. I just did a backup to the memory card did an upgrade then a restore didn't lose anything.

my email goes through apn so haven't try that bit, but I have had multiple apps going though wifi.

Have you tried setting the connection point to always ask?

How was Captain Grumpy?

The SIP seems really sensitive to APN changes so I have had to set that to the WIFI access point. I will have a look at setting the email to always ask. I can get it all going through the wifi but that is a manual change everytime I get home.

Capt. Grumpy was good considering I didn't take him a coffee. He even let me ride in the new flash car!

So you set a single SIP connection to Always On with the SmartConnect defined Access Point?

Can you register the internet access point for SIP calling? There is a small program from Nokia that is needed on some handsets to enable VoIP over 3G calling.

Leaving VoIP over 3G enabled will really chew through your battery.

The Nokia site gives the latest version as 201.34.38. Gumboot is yours Vodafone firmware or did you get a bulk deal on Mexican ones?

I am purposely not running the VOIP over 3g and haven't tried. Running SIP over WIFI at home. Smartconnect seems to break SIP no matter what.

I have tried:

SIP -> WIFI access point
Email -> SmartConnect which prioritises WIFI then 3G.

which is what I want so email is seamless when leaving the house. Am not bothered about SIP over 3g (except perhaps once in a blue moon).

Cheers.

That is dependant on your product code though.

I ran this exact same scenario on my old E65 and current E71 with no issues at all.

If I have my SIP registered with a WiFi AP I can check my email or use Gravity which defaults to my SmartConnect AP (and includes the same WiFi AP) at the same time with no issues.

Only problem is occasional breakup of call quality if you're on a call and try accessing the net probably due to the processor being maxed out.

OK. So it can be done. Thanks Steve. My SIP registration falls over every time I specify smartconnect as the AP for the email (even while specifying the wifi AP in SIP settings). I am using the default email client. Did you use the default email client or something else? Was the e65 Feature Pack 1?

I use Mail for Exchange for my email. E71 is FP1 and the E65 was also.

What version of smart connect do you use?

OK. Seem to have it running. A reboot or 7 might have helped. Now using wifi ap for sip and it is now registering and smartconnect for email. Thanks!
