Hi,

I have an E71 (vodafone) phone, which I really like.

On the weekend I deleted some contacts from the phone by mistake and decided to restore the contacts to the phone from a backup that I had created a week ago.

That process seemed to work fine, but after I had disconnected the E71 from my computer, the phone crashed. Just froze. So I restarted it only to have it display an error message "Start up failed. Contact your retailer" (or something like that).

I was just wondering whether this has happened to anyone here before, and/or if there is anything that I can do at home to get the phone to work again?

I have had the handset for 2 months from new, bought at DSE, so I am fine with taking it back to the retailer... but what would be reasonable for me to expect them to do? Replace the handset? Send it away to get looked at?

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Have you updated the firmware at all? Restoring system settings after a firmware upgrade can cause problems like this.

A hard reset might work, it can be done with hardware buttons in the right combination - search online (symbian-freak would be a good bet) for the right combination of buttons to press while powering the phone on. This will completely reset the handset to factory settings, you'll lose everything on there, but given it won't restart at all at the present time thats neither here nor there really.

EDIT: Here you go -

Just to make it easier, the power button does not have to be held down in order for it to restart.

Steps:

1) Hold down the green call button, the * key and the 3 key.
2) Press the power button while still holding the three buttons in step 1.
3) Once the phone boots, you can let go of the buttons and go through the set up wizard and set up the time and date.

Seems to me that your firmware has been corrupted. And it might need reinstalling or upgrading if there's a higher version. I suggest take it back to DSE.

Thanks heaps for that info... I will try it when I get home. You are right in your supposition that the firmware was upgraded - a couple of days earlier, so I presumed it was all ok.

Very well known problem, usually the only things that are safe to restore are calender/contacts, attempts to restore settings can wreak havok with the phone. Even better is to sync your contacts to Outlook/Ovi/some other external place and then restore them from there. I prefer Outlook, because its very easy to export them to other OS environs (I change phones often), but I also have them backed up to gmail contacts, ovi contacts, and in my web2mail account - I hate losing contact information that much...
