A colleague of mine is experiencing some strange problems getting some newer Ipaqs to connect to the Internet via USB connections via his laptops.

What "seemed" to be happening was that the Pocket PC would connect successfully to a website if it had previously brought up that site (perhaps while connected to another computer). I don't just mean displaying cached pages, but actually locating the website successfully and displaying the most current information.

But if a new site was entered - one it had never seen before - then it seemed unable to find it.

In my mind this smacks of a DNS problem - ie. it's unable to translate the URL to the correct IP address.

I played around with every single setting but could not get it working continuously and consistently.

I've searched the Internet, including this site, for a definitive guide about how to setup a Pocket PC for pass through connectivity but cannot find such a thing.

Has anybody else experienced something similar ... and found a solution that works every time?!

Sincerely,

Robert Werner

The passthrough is enabled by default on ActiveSync. Click the Options button and check if it is configured as "The Internet".

There's a difference of how this behaves when set to "Work" or "The Internet".

Also, make sure there is no firewall software blocking ActiveSync. This is common with Zone Alarm and Norton Personal Firewall.

Last, download VxUtil and install on this Pocket PC. You can use it for lots of network related stuff - ping, traceroute, etc.

We tried everything you suggested but it did not resolve the problem.

Why/how are previously visited sites' DNS entries being stored whereas new ones are not?

Do you have VxUtil installed on this Pocket PC? TRy doing a ping of a not-used website by name and then by IP. See if it works in any case. Have you tried ActiveSync passthrough in a computer connected to another network?
