Desparately seeking assistance using ActiveSync 3.5 with my e740!

I most recently spent 55 minutes with a Toshica "technical support" rep and countless hours on my own . . . to no avail . . . I still cannot get my desktop to sync with my e740. I am a Cisco Certified Networking and A+ instructor - so I am computer literate . . . yet I cannot use my current $500 paperweight called a Toshiba e740 PocketPC.

I am running a custom-built desktop Intel P4, 3.0ghz with 800mghz FSB Hyperthread, with 1gb RAM ans 160gb harddrive (7400rpm) running WinXP Professional - with all the most recent service packs, etc.

I have spent so much time with Toshiba "technical support" that the last rep told me my issues were operating system based and that I needed to contact my Windows dealer for further assistance. I did so . . . and my Windows "dealer" brought to my attention the "unending" list of poor "remarks" off the internet with a simple search. The most disconcerting part of this is that most remarks revolve around the fact that others cannot utilize their Wi-Fi functionality . . . I simply want to sync my PocketPc with my desktop PC.

Is that a shame or what!?

If there is anyone that has solve this issue, PLEASE contact me ASAP!

Anne, first I'd start upgrading your ActiveSync from 3.5 to the latest, 3.7, available on this page.

Initial things to check:

  • Are you trying just the normal sync via USB?
  • When you plug the Pocket PC does your PC recognise a new USB device?
  • After this, does it try to establish a partnership?

    Freitasm:

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.

I have tried upgrading to ActiveSync 3.7. However, that did not solve my problems. In fact, when I spoke with Toshiba's Technical Support, I was told that the e740 was not designed to work with this version of ActiveSync. I don't know if that is indeed correct, but I do know that it did not solve my connectivity issues.

In response to your "Initial things to check:"
    1. Are you trying just the normal sync via USB?
YES. That is the only means I currently possess.
Are you recommending another connection type (serial, etc.)?
    2. When you plug the Pocket PC does your PC recognise a new USB device?
NO. I believe this is due to the fact that the installation of ActiveSync is not properly
listing a WindowsCE USB driver in the hardware device list under USB conncections.
I still believe this is the root cause of my not being able to connect.

In attempts to correct this missing entry, I have downloaded a "clean" copy of
ActiveSync 3.5 to eliminate any CD application concerns. I have also downloaded the
Toshiba USB driver from the Toshiba site. None of these "fixes" have changed my
    current situation.

    3. After this, does it try to establish a partnership?
The only type of "connection" activity I can attain is the Device Connection application
launches and searches for available ports. Despite the fact that it notes all the available
pots, including my USB port, it never connects, thus never allowing me to establish a
    partnership.

Have you any more suggestions . . . I am open and still deparately seeking connectivity!

Can you please check in WXP under "Start->All Programs->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System->Hardware->Device Manager" if there is a device section called "Windows CE USB Devices" ? If you click on it then you should see a device called "TOSHIBA Pocket PC e740". If not, then you have a problem with the driver. Can you check in this case if you can see any exclamation mark in the "device manger". If yes, delete it. Connect your PDA again and reinstall the driver. As long as you can not see the "TOSHIBA Pocket PC e740" device in the "device manager" you will never be able to use it in any way by your computer i.e. for ActiveSync

A couple of things I forgot to ask too:

  • is the cradle connected directly to a USB port on your computer or to a USB HUB?
  • are you using a USB cable extender?
  • If you check the device manager on your computer, is power saving turned on for the USB?
  • are you sure the cradle is not deffective?

Some devices do not like to be connected via extender cables or HUBs. And the power saving configuration actually turns devices off. There's another thread here and the owner bought an ActiveSync cable and uses it instead of the cradle - works fine and the cradle was found guilty.

It's been about three months since Anne's initial plea for help on this thread, and it would really be good to know the outcome, assuming it has been resolved in some way.

I am using a similar configuration, including a Toshiba e755 w. PPC 2003 syncing with a PC operating on XP Professional, and thankfully, I am able to Activesync via the cradle (worked fine first time), or via Wi-Fi (took me days to figure out everything I needed to do at the PC, the wireless router and the PPC), as well as browse using the Wi-Fi access, but I can appreciate the distress of one who can't get it to perform the basic USB synchronization function.

vicw, have you checked all the hardware questions posted here?

Thinks like connecting directly to a USB port instead of HUB (even powered ones), making sure there's no Save Power option checked on the USB configuration.

One other important thing is making sure you have XML working fine on your machine. I know it looks strange, but I had a problem where my iPAQ was always seen as a Guest, no matter how many resets or hard resets I did. It turned out to be that ActiveSync requires XML2 installed and working perfectly - somehow when I had MSXML3 and MSXML4 installed on my desktop XML2 stopped working.

One way to have this installed is by doing a full reinstall of the OS, or sometimes a full install of Internet Explorer, or looking for the XML2 download on the MSND web site.

I did the XML install and my Activesync started working again... Of course, YMMV, but these are things to consider.

Thanks Freitasm, but I don't have a problem. Mine is working great, but I was asking about the outcome of Anne's problem. This thread doesn't indicate how it ended up, or what the underlying problem was found to be, assuming it was resolved at some point.

I see. You're right, there's no closure in this case...
