Someone is trying to make a fast buck selling a pirate copy. Beware - the cracked version was beta, there's no support and if it fails to install you will have a worthless brick...

Thanks Guys!

I was looking for some version of WM 5.0 to create some mobile applications for the smartphone platform. As I want to test these applications directly on the Smartphones.

However found another one with free download of beta version for XDA 2/HTC Himalaya to play with:

There are no free beta version of Windows Mobile 5! The only beta version available was controlled by Microsoft and installed under NDA. Windows Mobile 5 was not made public for beta testing. Anything else is a leak.

We don't know what the have changed, so if you install and run this, there's no guarantees your code will run on an actual device when released.

The last version is RTM and this is not being distributed, not even to developers or MVP.

I have a HTC Hymalaia with Beta 2, and that was under a few NDA being signed a couple of months before the official announcement. Being enrolled on their official beta, I know how this worked.

If you want to test, the standalone device emulator is exactly like a physical device. You should have no problem using it. Available from an official site, on MSDN.

Thanks Freistam!

So you are saying that If I test my applications in a emulator environment [Visual Studio 2003/2005] then it will definitely run on the smartphones with WM 5.0 with no further testing ?

Well I am creating appications that will be mostly be network centric and it will be used under WI-Fi Hotspots [as these hotspots are going to be a common in cafes/startbucks etc] . So my applications will require the user to chosse either GSM/GPRS or WI-FI or if possible Bluetooth to whenever/whereever avaialble to get on the network. [am not sure if the OS will automatically select which ever is avaialble for the application ... am bit new to this kinda development]

thanks

Where are you located? We have a Wellington .Net and Windows Mobile user groups that meet regularly. There are these in Auckland as well. You could join in one of the meetings and discuss some of these development issues with some people with more experience?
