If you were buying a PDA today with GPRS (or CDMA) and Windows Mobile 5 as prerequisites, what are your options? Any announcements yet, or expected soon, from Vodafone and Telecom?

I see that www.dell.com has a Dell Axim X51V -- but not in www.dell.co.nz.

Wait for the first week of October for the CDMA option, and soon after for the GSM option.

Are you talking about ppc 6700 (apache)? I think it is too early to telecom to release it, as sprint in states only just released this to business customers. I was expecting telecom to release this phone sometime in November.

If anyone interested in apache they can find info here,

Why early? I saw the device and it seems ok in terms of software. Also I met Sprint after the Palm/Microsoft press conference and other Smartphone Summit/CTIA Wireless activities and got to check their version. The build is nice and very solid. This is my comparison shot I took during the meeting (one of many devices they showed me, including the new Sprint i930 Windows Mobile Smartphone released the day after we met):

Comparing Sprint PPC 6700 and Treo 650

I didnt realise it was that small... looks good.

I see it has mini-usb, will this mean it will act as USB mass storage without extra drivers when plugged into an xp/2k pc without activesync? (and if so, would that provide access to the mini-sd card?).

mmm nice and small...

i doubt the mini-usb can be a Mass Storage Device without ActiveSync... because all newer Imate products and not to mention many HTC devices are also using mini-USB for connection. Though it would be great if the device can be a USB-MSD withouth ActiveSync and behaves like Palm's LifeDrive.

Well it certainly looks like a nice phone. I hope telecom will release it by October. I read on pdaphonehome forum that apache cannot send pxts, is this a limitation of software or hardware?

The Apache is a CDMA device, and 'PXT' is a trademark of Vodafone who have a GSM/UMTS network.

If you were referring to Telecoms service - 'Photo Messaging', then I am not sure... I was hoping that it would.

(Sorry, no breakfast leaves me a bit belligerent)

The Imate/Harrier (almost identical units but one GSM, one CDMA) could do PXT on GSM, but no Photo Messaging on CDMA. Im not sure of the reason behind that either.

:-)

You can't really trust a review from microsoft, specially when it runs Windows Mobile 5.0!
