Anyone know if the HTC Harrier is upgradeable to Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition or if the ROM is upgradeable to a higher version? Anyway to backup text messages?
HTC have not released information on any plans for an upgrade for Harrier or Blue Angel... Due to its memory configuration I would say it is not likely to happen.
So far it seems unlikely. WM5 expects some new hardware buttons and non-volatile memory requirements on the devices it runs on.
Although it is possible to get it to run on a WM2003 device it (MS used the older Falcon type devices for their own beta testing of WM5.) it's unlikely either HTC/Imate will make the effort to do this change for several reasons
1) It costs them a lot to purchase the license from MS, develop the rom and test it
2) End users doing rom updates= painful and costly support for vendor
3) They can make more money by selling you a new device with WM5 on it
4) The end result would be an OS running on hardware that was not designed for it and the experience may not be worth the pain.
Having said this, I-Mate have been pretty good about releasing updates to their other phones. For instance when MS released the new SKU with Windows Media Player 10 on board they released it on the clubimate site. This was more of a Service Pack then a full OS release so I'm not sure it's a good example, but at least you can hope.
