I've taken the plunge and purchased an HTC Snap. I have five more days to decide whether I want to keep it, as long as I don't charge it. I have only  little bit of juice left and have found what could be a deal-breaker:

The phone is using the contacts I have on the sim card. The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to be able to search for contacts by typing in part of (not necessarily the beginning) of the contact name. ie If I want to find "Joe Smith", when I type "smi", it doesn't find that contact, only others in the list beginning with Smith.

I assume that the work around is to import the contacts into the phone (I don't have Outlook installed, only Thunderbird) with the contact names preordered into fields that the HTC can understand.

My question is:

If the contacts are saved correctly onto the phone, can I search for a contact using any part of the contact name, or do I have to remember the beginning of the contact name in order to find it?

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

With my Snap, Outlook Synched so the contacts are on the phone, I open Contacts and start typing and any matches to the word combination first or last name is picked up. This also works with the recently dialled numbers list.

OK. So that gives me some comfort. It would seem that my suspicions are correct, in that the contact details just need to be tidied up first and then entered into the phone. Searching off of the SIM card isn't really a clear indicator as to how well the Snap's contact search function is.

Would you agree?

I have a question about the Alarm Clock function. Is it best to start a new thread for that?

(I won't be using outlook as I just want the contacts on the phone only and backed up of course).

If you have Outlook on your PC already, then I'd reccomend using it for storing your contacts. It's easier to edit and clean them up, also you have a backup on your PC that way, and can export them to various formats.

Better to start a new thread if it's off topic from the opening question.

I'm a Linux user now and tend to only use MS Windows when I have no choice. So therefore, no Outlook.

If i have to install it I will, but I saw in this thread here someone suggested "PIM Backup". I'll give that one a go. I'll also try setting up Active Sync in Linux:

looks like it searches for any combinations of first and last name (but you must start with first letter, first/last name), when they are in the device not on the SIM
