Hi all,

My unlocked Blackberry 8830 World Edition is permanently stuck in SOS mode.

It was working perfectly with a 2degrees SIM card for about 3 months, then it started going into SOS mode for long periods of the day. Previously it only went into SOS mode when out of service. Now it is stuck in SOS mode constantly.

I've tried putting a working 2degrees card and Vodafone SIM in and they don't work either. My 2degrees SIM still works in other cellphones.

I also tried wiping the entire BB and started from the beginning again, but no luck.

The only thing I can think of is that the phone ID is somehow blocked, if thats possible. Or the aerial inside has slowly shat itself?

I love my BB and really want it working again, I've been using 6 year old celly to get me through and it's pretty much done its dash...please help :)

SOS mode only means handset is camping on another carrier

Call me stupid, but what do you mean by camping on another carrier?

SOS mode is designed for emergency calls. What john means is that when you are out of your coverage area your phone will piggy back off another carrier for emergency calls only.
I occasionally have this problem with my bold, it seems to have a problem re registering with my carrier when I come into range again. Usually switching my mobile network off then on again resolves it

Alrighty thanks for the replies.

If my phone is out of coverage when it shouldn't be, ( its constantly in SOS mode now) then am I right to assume my internal aerial is broken and my phone is basicly a weird cup coaster now? Or can networks somehow ban my phones ID from accessing their networks?

Ta,

Try going into the basement of a building etc, somewhere where there is no coverage. When you come out your phone will look for networks and hopefully latch onto the correct one.  This works with my 8830 WE.

Are you seriously suggesting there isn't a manual network selection/search on the BlackBerry?

No idea. I hate my Blackberry too much to even look.

Good answer. I have a BlackBerry here, in the box. I was asked to use it for two weeks as my only mobile device. Couldn't wait any longer to go back to my other devices. The user interface and functionality would put the BlackBerry as the last in my list of any mobile device to use.

I've tried manually selecting the vodafone network and also 2degrees network, but no luck just SOS.

I loved my Blackberry, mainly used it for browing the web with Operamini, and also great for txt's. Calendar is easy to use and the notes/reminders. Also the search function to go through 1000+ messages, it will easily sort into who sent them, or which day...

Would be interested to know if my phones ID has been blocked somehow? Although it wont work now even with other carriers working SIM cards inserted..

Is there any way to check if it is black listed?

I called 2degrees but they say they don't know how to even check..

If 2degrees doesn't have a blacklist, is there some sort of national blacklist?

Both 2degrees AND Vodafone will not work anymore, both SIMs are recognised but phone displays SOS mode.

Might be time to take this bad boy apart and have a play...

I still have it happening to me a couple of times a month. This time around I just took the battery out and left it for five minutes, popped the battery back in, turned it on and it found the network again.

Perhaps a firmware upgrade? Not hard to do, just search for "blackberry bricked" on Google and follow your nose. One of the posts will give you a deep link into the blackberry site where you can download the latest firmware. You could try just manually finding it or surfing to it but I've never been successful!

Best regards,
Aaron Davidson.
