I am trying to find why my new E72 is incurring packet data usage while I am sitting at home using Wi-Fi connection. My old E90 never did that - or at least it used to ask me which access point to use.

I am guessing it is something related to the default settings for the device set by the service provider [I got this from Vodafone].

Does anyone know how to:

(1) Find out which application is initiating my packet connection?

(2) How do I avoid packet traffic when I am in a Wi-Fi area with a known accesspoint? For example I was at home all day Saturday - and my phone was idle - yet according to the call logs the phone sent 2.67MB and received 1MB??

Yeah - I could remove the VF-NZ access point. But I do want to receive emails when I am out of office - I just want to be in control of the Packet use - and dont want it to waste the VF-NZ data allocation when it does not need to.

I been through the settings for Ovi maps / Email / Browser etc. - but there is nothing obvious I can see. [I just put Maps setting to offline mode].
I want email to be on online all the time - but only use VF-NZ if it cant connect to my Wi-Fi access point and only after asking me first.

Make sure the modem in the E72 is not set to always online only when needed

Have two options on the E72 under Packet data settings - When needed & When available . . suggest trying When needed . .

Yeah it is on 'When Needed'.

I wish they had three options:

- When needed
- When available
- Always Ask

Another thing: I also have a setting under Settings > Connection > Destinations > Internet.
The Wi-Fi access point is set as Priority 1, and VF-NZ Packet Data accesspoint is set as Priority 2.

And under Wireless LAN I got Scan for networks set at 'Every 5 mins', and 'Internet Connectivity' set to 'Run Automatically'.

Here's a couple of other settings to check which may also help.

Settings - Connection - Destinations - Internet then make your wireless broadband priority1

Not directly related but this might be of use to . . .
Go into your email - options - settings - account settings - When to synchronise . . . . Try selecting off on all the sync options which will mean that you will need to Send & Recieve email to update email but will only connect when you want to.

I also believe that there is no charge while PDP is attached and your only charged when data is transmitted.

Not too sure why it would be transferring data if you have made your wireless broadband priority one.

Thanks. I just did that.

It happened again. I just glanced at the phone to check the time - and it happened right in front of my eyes:

A status bar displayed a message saying Packet Data Connection Active and then it disappeared. When I clicked through to the Log for the Packet Data connection it showed 2.5 k received and 2.6k sent (I reset it 1 hour ago) and the log shows the connection has been on for 1 minute. This is despite the fact that it was connected to Wi-Fi at the same time and connected to the Internet. I then asked it to show me all open application - and the only applications open in the background were the Camera, email, Menu and standby.

Your GPS is not polling is it? The camera may be asking for a position using the A-GPS which will use mobile data no matter what. It wouldn't go through a MB in a day though.

I have not used the camera today - unless it wants to geocode historic pictures! Anyway - I closed the camera and removed all the media from it - just to be on the safe side.

I have reset the counter and closed down all the apps (apart from the Menu which cant be shut down). I will check it again later in the day.

Whole two hours gone with no additional packet traffic showing up in the logs!!

The last thing I changed was the IntelliSync settings.

You can access the IntelliSync settings from Email: as follows:

Settings > Account Settings > Account Information > Access Point.

Replace the default 'VFNZ WAP' with your Wi-Fi access point - and Bingo! No more Network traffic in Wi-Wi range.

Does that mean I don't get charged if I get an email header - but only if I download it? [Pardon my ignorance about PDP.

If you get an email header you will be charged as it is data (if it comes via your mobile data connection). Have you considered adding mobile broadband lite? (100 MB per month for $10). This should be more than enough data for a months use while out and about.

I got a pretty 'good' data package with Vodafone NZ ;) - So that is not the reason why I went through this exercise.

I am just making sure I don't incur huge data charges when I go overseas from other providers.

Which is why I want a good handle on what my mobile does - so I don't get a nasty surprise when I come back.
