I'm a little bit in the dark on when handsets will be available with WP7. A few websites mention release 'by holiday 2010' but I'm not sure if this means handsets will be available by then or if it is some kind of paper launch.

I thought about getting an HTC HD2 but it would be nice to have something with an AMOLED screen and the newer OS but if that is going to be a year or so away I might reconsider.

Anyone know how long this kind of thing takes?

It was so promising the early news about WM7 but now every time I check up on it there is just more and more disappointment (need I mention the lack of true multitasking, and not running non-approved apps, etc....)

Didn't Microsoft learn anything from Apple & the iPhone when it came out without copy & paste...

At the moment the Nokia N8-00 is the most exciting upcoming phone, FINALLY a top flagship phone with xenon flash! (for the first time since the awesome Nokia N82)

personally i would wait for a windows mobile 7 device. there were rumours about the hd2 being able to be upgraded to wm7 but now it has been confirmed not.

from the launch ms says that it will be out by holidays 2010 i.e. nov/dec 2010 in the us. so i would say by that time there would be wm7 devices out.

another thing with technology is that things get outdated fast. if you feel the hd2 is right for you, go on buy it.

i'm still using my touch pro, but the beauty of wm6.x is the amount of customised roms on xda-developers for the htc devices that makes it feel like a phone everytime you flash!

I read somewhere that official WP7 devices will be released in the 4th quarter of this year.

I'm sure WP7 will be ported to the HD2 anyway by one of many of the geniuses at XDA, if you're happy to accomodate a custom ROM that is.

I've spent some decent $$$ on my Touch Pro 2 so I'm waiting for a port of WP7 for it also. Might be unlikely being that the hardware requirements for WP7 are very high, at least 1Ghz processor.

Up to you really, but it would be nice to have a handset that has WP7 working out of the box! You never know MS could spring a surprise and release a bit early.

October and November launch for Windows Phone 7. LG would be the first to bring out their QWERTY keyboard model which was also demoed on the endgadget show. Then MS also showed off Asus Garmin unit which they used as a prototype model to demo the OS in Barcelona and Samsung i8910 to which the OS was also ported.

Going to wait for HTC to show off their model which will launch in December.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I might wait in that case - hopefully the battery on my Apache can struggle through a few more months (and no-one sees me with it in public!). =)

Officially, no WP7 handsets has been announced but expect first releases in Q4 or maybe earlier. Personally wouldn't buy any WM6x devices unless they are really cheap, the HTC HD series ain't cheap. Basically, WM pretty much a dead-end platform with minimal future support from OEMs and developers. I doubt any WM devices will be officially upgradeable to WP7, even upgrading from WM5 to WM6 was rare enough. With WP7 you'll have much more choices of devices from many different OEMs rather than a few with WM. Saying that, how many of them will be available in NZ from the carriers is a different story, e.g. Android.

Yes the carriers seem to to take some time roll out newly released handsets.
Once released overseas I would probably be able to get one from one of the online computer type stores that seem to start importing them a few month earlier, otherwise it sounds like I would be looking at 2011.

The win 7 phones will probably be released here in NZ about 6 mths after their USrelease so possibly here by mid 2011 and then we will probably get a modest selection of handsets anyway. Disappointed with the current range of handstes the carriers provide here but probably due to market size. I think the aussie carriers have a better handset range than us.

Yep, our small market means we'll get the crumbs (if any) of the first release of wp7 handsets. Best hope is voda releasing a flagship model but don't expect a deluge from either carriers.
