Hi

I'm about to receive a Wizard (K-JAM etc), and as a university research technician (electronics), I'm dead keen to use my new PPC for data acquisition (DAQ) in the lab. I presently
have the NSBASIC installed in my old Jornada 520 series, and so far as
I'm able to tell, it looks good, though I don't really know what I'm
doing yet (nothing new there then).

I have found a Bluetooth-RS232 transceiver module:

Using NSBASIC (or any other method), is it likely that I will be able to access this device
for general purpose DAQ? Simple digital I/O would be enough, I can then convert to analogue D2A and A2D.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

You should be ok. After pairing the K-Jam with a device you can create one or more virtual COM ports. Your program will then use these COM ports as if they were standard ones.

There's however a Bluetooth SDK for Windows Mobile 5. You might have to look for some information on MSDN.

By the way, I see you posted this originally in our Windows Mobile Smartphone. The K-Jam is a Pocket PC (PDA first, with mobile phone) instead of a Smartphone (mobile phone first, with PDA functions).

There are some other distinctions between both platforms. It's a bit confusing, but read this article for more details.

Thanks Mauricio, that looks very promising.


I’m a bit surprised not to find people hacking these highly mobile platforms to interact with the “outside world” – or maybe they are, and I simply haven’t found them.

Back in the “old days”, when my colleagues and I first got our hands on such hi-tech goodies as the Acorn Atom, and the Sinclair ZX80, Spectrum BBC-B etc, our technical passion (when not focussing on our government work) was to get the beasts to drive things outside of themselves. Lighting an LED was good to start with, then stepper-motors, then A2D & D2A converters, and so it went on.

PPCs or PDAs (XDAs MDAs, I can’t keep track), would seem to have such a great potential for use beyond the mundane of keeping a diary of appointments, or making a phone call. They should be linked in with remote-control/robotics, telemetry, general DAQ. A whole stack of things!

Hence my query earlier – I’m determined to find some means of linking the K-JAM through some path in order to – say – drive stepper motors, or programme micro-controllers, like the OOPic series that I use in the lab.

Anyway, I’ll crack on exploring the wealth of riches in this site.

Hi Ken,

Without sounding too much like a plug for my company, you may be interested to know that we (and many others) already do some of the things that you mentioned with regards to data acquisition and control using Pocket PC devices. More specifically, our flagship product, PocketDAQ Pro, is what allows us to interface with almost any device that supports rs232, infrared, and/or Bluetooth.

Check it out, it may save you a lot of time programming and hacking. ;)
