For two years I have tried to connect ipaq1940 to internet via bluetooth using the modem of my sharp902 3g phone. No success. The operator is vodafone.

I have used your bluetooth guide and receive the same message I always receive, that is to check my settings. I dont know why I have persisted this long but this is definitely my last port of call before I bin both devices and buy an XDA.

The ipaq 1940 is a great device but just once I would like to see the screen light up with a page from the net without having to use the USB cable.

Can anyone help...Please.

If the Sharp 902 supports Bluetooth DUN, you should only need to configure the Pocket PC exactly as described in this article.

You need to use a phone number *99# to use the default configuration of your phone. OR use *99***[x]#, where [x] is 1 through 9, depending on what configuration on your phone you have to use.

You may also have to use a init string, in the format +CGDCONT=1,,"[APN]" where [APN] is the correct APN used by your operator.

And, of course, your account must have data enabled.

Dear Freitasm,

Thank you for such a swift reply. I will try the number you suggest but what is 'init string' .Where do I enter this on my ppc. Also what is the APN for vodafone or where do you think I can find it.

I know this is probably like pulling teeth for you but think of my stupidity as a challenge that must be overcome.

Regards.

Dear Freitasm,

Using *99*# changed nothing. I still receive the following messages;

Waiting for device.
Connection Established
Unable to establish a connection.

A bluetooth manager box also pops up to say the following;

The connection failed and could not be reestablished.

These are the same messages I always receive, it never varies.
Can someone help me please.

Dear Freitasm,

I have tried both the numbers you suggest. Also I no data is enabled on phone.
I typed in the string you suggest and used 'Vodafone Live!.' as the 'APN'.

Vodafone told me the user name and password is 'vodafone'. I entered this when requested.

Received same message as in previous post.

The set -up you describe is fairly simple and similar to the set up I received from Vodafone but neither gets me connected.

The ppc connects via bluetooth to the phone and dials the number .After about 20 seconds I receive the fail message I have described previously.

At one stage I had about ten short-cuts on the ppc bluetooth manager. They all had different connection names, dialing numbers, APN's etc... all gave me the same fail to connect message.

Is there any other information I could supply that might help.

Did you get this APN name from Vodafone?

First this is highly unusual. Vodafone APN names are simply a single name, or a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), such as web.vodafone.net.nz here in New Zealand. Please check this APN.

Second, Vodafone Live! will only give you access to WAP, so if you use this APN on your Pocket PC you won't go anywhere on the Internet.

You can delete all connections related to this issue on your Pocket PC and start the process again. I think you don't have the correct configuration on neither your mobile phone or Pocket PC.

I recommend you visit a Vodafone store and get the required information from them.

Also, if you phone has an email client, you can try using it to see if you can at least reach an email server you can use, to make sure your account can get to the Internet.

Freitasm,

Sorry for delay. I got the APN as you suggested. It is , isp.vodafone.ie, . I went to the store to get the staff to set me up with the correct connection info , They where useless.

Spent an hour on the phone to vodafone tech support. Made no progress. same message as usual', could not connect for unknown reason', ...............

Eventually the tech support guy said that he thinks that the Sharp902 can only connect to other sharp products. I am not sure about this.

Anyway, I decided to use a different phone so I tried to connect the ppc to a nokia 6230.
It would not pair . the message was this,'' could not connect for security reasons''.

Yours in a state of bepuzzlement,

alandelemere.

I think they may be right - the Sharp902 may not support DUN (only File Transfer and Serial Connections).

The Nokia 6230 should work, but only if you have the latest patches on your h1940 - there's a problem with the way the old iPaq models handled Bluetooth security and the way the Nokia 6230 does. So get the latest updates from the HP.com site install that and then try with the Nokia.

Your init string should be something like Z;+CGDCONT=1,,"isp.vodafone.ie".

Freitasm,
Thank you for your help. I think a new phone or ppc or both is the only solution. Having said that , my son just got a psp for christmas and with the switch of a button on the side of the unit he connected to the home wireless internet instantly. No set-up ,nothing. Thats the way all connections should be. Hes walking around the house with the internet at his disposal while I enviously look on. Whats the world coming to.

Regards,
