It seems the only video files my phone will play are wmv. Obviously this is not good when we want to play divx and xvid and maybe even the odd mpg.

Is it possible to update the codecs or anything like that? And if so, how?

Welcome to Geekzone... You can't add new codecs for the Windows Media Player, but you can use other players. The Core Pocket Media Player is a good free media player that will play mpeg files, including Divx...
