I want to tether my PC with my Nokia 5800.  There seems to be two ways to do this, using Ovi Suite or Joiku.

I downloaded Ovi suite.  It talks to my 5800 but when I try to use the 5800 to connect to the internet the connection fails. I am on the XT network.  Ovi suite tells me that it is trying the connect to Telecom, so from this I have deduced that it is talking with the phone, plus the synch options show the phones data on the Ovi suite.

Is there something I need to change on the phone set up to get this to work?

Is Joiku a better option?  Ovi suite is free, there is a free version of Joiku but this doesn't support email apparently, plus I'm not sure the paid for version does either.

Has any one used their 5800 for tethering? How did you get it to work?

Thanks

Check the modem settings in the Ovi Suite to confirm the software is looking for the correct modem to dial (i.e. the phone and not a 56k modem).

Do you see any messages or actions on the phone when you attempt to tether?

No Messages on the phone,  the two way arrow beside the Bluetooth symbol is displayed whicg indicates to me that the phone is "talking" via Bluetooth.

Will check the Ovi settings.

The phone should display something (i.e. connecting via...), I could be wrong but it seems there is something wrong in you're setup?

I was trying to connect with Bluetooth. I have since tried with the USB cable, and after the USD connection was set up and the phone modem recognised by Windows and a subsequent computer restart it works via the USB cable.  I am using the phone connection to make this post.

The phone just shows the USB label and the two way arrow on the 3.5G label.

Thanks for the help.

The downside of Bluetooth is that it's probably a lot slower than the speed your phone supports due to the limitation of using a serial port. Using a data cable to get faster speeds can be a pain.

I know a few people who use Joikuspot and love it.

Have since downloaded Joiku. I haven't had a chance to try my PC  but I cannot get my PDA (Palm TX) to connect to the internet with Joiku.  It seems to talk to the phone but no internet connection. :(

I'll keep playing but any tips would be appreciated.  Thanks

Be aware that the free Joikuspot version does not have any security features.

I bought the full version when it was on special from their website and it was fantastic.

I'd recommend it.

Thanks, I was aware of the limitations of the free version.  I wanted to try it first to see that it would do what I wanted before I spent any money.

I tried Joiku with my Pc and it works well.  I think the problem with the PDA is to do with the way the "Ad hoc" connections work.

On the strength of how well it worked with my PC I decided to buy the premium version, mainly to get the encryption, BUT, I cannot get the PC to access the internet when I have encryption enabled, it works OK with encryption disabled.  It gives all the indiactions that it has connected to the phone but when you try to access a web page IE asks you if you want to go online or work off line. Obviously there not being a connection to the ISP.

I am using a Linksys USB network WiFi adaptor WUSBF54G and the Linksys driver for this on my PC since it doesn't have built in WiFi.

Any ideas, Yes I have entered the encryption key in case anyone is wondering.

I finally got Joikuspot to work with encryption enabled.  What a battle!!!!  This was one case of where reading the book didn't work.  The installation and help documentation tells you to use ASCII code.  However as I eventually discovered, my wireless network adaptor configuration utility does not accept ASCII you have to use HEX, this is an option on the Joiku set up page.

To add to the confusion there are two boxes for passwords/keys on the connection page of the wireless configuartion utility on my computer.  As my luck would have it one box would accept ASCII however this wasn't the box I should have been entering the password/key into.

Also the box where I was supposed to enter the HEX  code showed all letters in uppercase, even though they were typed in in lower case as was shown on the Joiku screen on my phone.  This made me think this wasn't the correct place to be entering the password.

Some information on the linksys site told me which box I was supposed to use and when I tried enering tha password here it would not accept ASCII code.  A switch to HEX and Hey Presto!!!!!

Talk about making it hard Trev.

Once I got it all figured out Joiku Spot works very well and the download speeds are quite fast.
