In terms of devices I have had many win mobile devices that were prefectly fine, but the iphone I love - very smart very easy to use, GPS turn by turn apps, runkeeper and many others make this device much more than just a mobile.
The networks are tied back to the device, if you want to use mobile data and you have an iphone telecom is the obvious choice but vodafone has pretty good coverage and speeds for their 900mhz network it's just the the iphone doesn't support the frequencies.
