Playing golf, as I do, my friend was using his N97 during the course of the round and I asked about the GPS. I then sent him a bunch of co-ordinates from my N95 which I use for telling me how far I am from a particular hole (yes I'm a geek) for him to use.

However, he could only open the data in maps, which is not terribly useful. On the N95 you have the option GPS data with the little compass which tells you how far from a point you are. Is this not on the N97mini? I'm not familiar with the phone, but it seemed to have a very shallow menu and I couldn't find anything resembling the GPS tool of my phone.

He said he could just get an app, but I was suprised it wasn't simply on the phone.

Thoughts?

And yes, playing with phones mid round proved to deraill me completely...

Your post got me curious.

I have a 5800 XM which uses the OS v9.4 Series 60 which is very similar to the N97 (if not the same).

On this phone there is the Ovi (Nokia) Maps app in the Main Menu but there is also a Location app in the "Applications" menu.  This has a Landmark option and a GPS data option.  I am guesing the the Landmark option might be what he needs to use.  I have never loaded any landmarks so don't know if there is a bearing and distance option that goes with a landmark, tho is makes sense that there might be.

It might be worth having a look for the Location app.

Further to my previous post.  I had a play with the Location app on my 5800.  I made up a landmark.

I then opened the Location app, chose the "GPS Data" option then the "Navigation" option and then set my destination as the landmark and got a bearing pointer and distance just as I presume you described in your opening post.

Your friend should be able to do with his N97 exactly as you do with your N95.

Hope this helps.

That's what I thought too, however I couldn't find the location app in his menu. I'll have another look next time I see him.

Make sure you open the "Applications" option on the main menu then you should see the "Location" app.
