I have been trying to find an answer to this one and believe it or not the Microsoft website was absolutely no help at all.

Say, you have 3 mobile devices (2 x WM5 and 1 x Palm OS5) and you have them all syncing to the same Exchange Account. You delete a Contact from one device and sync to Exchange. Exchange updates Contacts to reflect the deletion. You then sync your other device and presto the Contact reappears back in Exchange.

I am assuming that the WM5 'Device ID' bears no relevance to Exchange and is used as an identifier when syncing to a local PC. Which means that Exchange only identifies a device based in the Exchange username/password.

What I think I am looking to do is to have one WM5 device that can update Exchange (delete/add) and the other 2 devices are setup to be 'Exchange overwrites device' only i.e. not 2 way sync.

Is it possible?

There's no option to have "one way only" synchronisation when synchronising to Exchange via ActiveSync. What you have is a "who wins" option, which in case of differences (such as updating the same record on the device and on the server) will give priority to one change or another - I always have this set to "server wins".

This behaviour is strange - I have four Windows Mobile devices here (yes, all syncing to the same account) and changes in one always replicate correctly to the others.

Exchange ActiveSync uses a different approach as the desktop ActiveSync, and it's much more robust.

The only variable in your case is the Palm OS. Perhaps something is wrong on the Exchange ActiveSync implementation? Are you able to test this (I know you are good at testing) in a way that you update a record on the first device, synchronise, synchronise the second device, check the record being deleted on this one, and so on until you find which device "restores" the record?

Each device has a unique id on the server, and it's not only the username/password that controls the synchronisation. This is a screenshot from the Mobile Admin web page (available as a separate download):

With this page you can remote wipe a Windows Mobile 5.0 device (if running AKU2) or delete a partnership from the server side (in effect causing the device to be reloaded with Exchange data on the next ActiveSync connection).

If you have problems after the tests, please contact me in private so I can gather some information and forward to some people...
