Hey there,

I was talking with a friend recently and they had heard something about the new Symbian OS. Does anyone know anything about it?

N8 launching now/soon with Symbian^3. I think its a half way house to the all new Symbian ^4. Personally I think 3 looks and smells like the current Symbian, but it is supposedly better at touch.

i dont know what Nokia is up to at the moment, theres the N8 coming out with Symbian 3, theres already leaked photos of Symbian 4, plus towards the end of the year there will be another new OS called MeeGo, i think this is the one to look out for tho, as this will be Nokia's "superphone"

The reason I am asking is because I like Nokia but the lag just gets to me. I feel like they want me to buy an iPhone...

Hi guys.
Yes from the end of the 3rd quarter this year the TOUCH variant of Symbian (otherwise known as S60 Version 5 or now S^1) will be launched in the form of Symbian ^3. This version of the platform is to be seen as an evolution of what we currently have with S^1, with the S^4 (due next year) as a more pronounced change.

Here's a video of what S^3 should look like on a Nokia device. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkvRE_Eh9PM

So the whole double tap/single tap UI we currently have in S^1 is replaced by a much more efficient and user friendly single tap UI throughout.

Above this MeeGo will sit in the top tier of devices. I don't know what this will finally look like on Nokia devices, as I haven't seen anything running it, but here is a video showing what the initial version of MeeGo is currently looking like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW5wpg5epMs

The operating platforms for Nokia will look like this from here on in.

Series 40/S40 - Entry level and feature phone
Series 60/S60/S^* - Mid tier smartphone
MeeGo - Top end smartphone

Hopefully this is a little clearer for you.

Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer which ones I can.

The N8 (running Symbian^3) is much higher spec'd than previous smartphones from Nokia, so hopefully lag won't be an issue. Plus, it has a powerful GPU (well, powerful for a phone), which should deal with any lag caused by rendering all the pretty transitions that seem to be important to a lot of people these days.

I'm planning on picking up a N8 when it is released, so I'd be keen to find out when that will be! And where is the best place in NZ to get it from? I'm guessing Vodafone or Telecom will pick it up - but their markups are ridiculous. I remember when the N95 was released, it was $1600 from Vodafone, or $1200 from a parallel importer. I can't help but wonder why Nokia doesn't sell direct to consumers - surely they'd be able to take a bigger cut then?

Meego! It is a fusion of Moblin (pushed by Intel) and Maemo (what powers Nokia N900, so take a look at that for a rough idea of what Meego could be like)
