Dear all

I have just got myself a Ipaq 5550 and want /would like to set it up so that I can access the internet and send emails when I'm on the move. I have looked at the intructionsfor setting it up but they make no sense and wwhen I have tried them I can be doing it right because nothing works. Can anyone help/point me in the right direction for some simple and plain english instructions?

Its usually easier to turn security for your Wireless lan off (temporarily) while you are setting this up - once you get it running you can turn it back on and work through any isses, with the knowledge that the thing actually works. (So it might be turning MAC filtering off, and/or WPA etc)

With that done, turn your wifi on on the ipaq, and see if it pops up a notification to say it found a network (or an icon in the top bar of the screen), and see if you can connect.

You may need to head into the connection settings through START > SETTINGS and find somewhere to put your gateway in (the ip address of your router).

See how you go with that and come back to us.

Very important: make sure you go to the HP website and download the latest Wi-Fi drivers for your specific model. There are lots of problems solved on these models.

Next: make sure you connect without any security, as suggested. If it connects ok, then turn the security on again. Once the security is off, turn Wi-Fi on on your iPAQ and it should just show a notification that a new network is visible. Accept the connection - it's all automatic really.

Also, make sure your Access Point allows 802.11b connections, because this is the only one your iPAQ can use.

Are now I have a problem. Am I surposed to have the Ipaq connected to the PC to set this up. by the way I don't have a wireless router and I connect to the internet through a cable modem.

In the subject you want say you want to setup a WLAN.

If you want to use it at home then you need either a Wireless Access Point or a PC with a wireless LAN card (in AdHoc mode). For use while out and about you need to be close to a hotspot provider.

Sorry Turps, you will need to buy a wifi router, or a bluetooth dongle for your PC.
The iPaq wont connect straight to a cable modem.
Are you mainly wanting access in your home/office? Or were you thinking of out and about?
