I have just got a Treo 650 - and it is the Vodafone version (I think because it has the place to insert a SIM card). Can the device be configured to use the Telecom network? If someone could help me that would be great!

Because they are two different technologies, and use different chipsets, they simply cannot physically communicate with the other network.

Well - if it can't do Telecom - does anyone want to buy a cheap Treo?? (am on a Telecom plan and got the Treo from Insurance)

Interesting... When I had an insurance company replacing a mobile phone (a few years ago), they actually asked what operator, then contacted a store near my workplace and a couple of days later got a phone call from the store saying I had a phone waiting for me there.

Very fast and clean - and with the correct operator. That was State Insurance.

Mine was State Insurance too - but we had a Zire 72 stolen - and they upgraded it to a Treo as they couldn't get another Zire. Not a bad tradeup!

So essentially they were just replacing the PDA and therefore didn't have to ask which provider we were with.
