Can anyone check if I've got this right?
If I want an Telecom/HTC Apache phone, but I dont to give up my vodafone number, then I need to get the Qteck 9100/HTC Wizard which is the same body, but accepts simm's?

And who supplies them in NZ?

Correct. The HTC Apache is a CDMA only device, while the HTC Prodigy (which some people call HTC Wizard, but they are different) works on GSM/GPRS/EDGE.

Mind you, the Prodigy will be connected to GPRS only since there's no EDGE service in New Zealand. The GPRS service is about 10x (or more) slower than CDMA EVDO average speeds...

You can get the HTC Prodigy as i-mate K-Jam in New Zealand, directly through Vodafone resellers.

Oops my bad, I didn't explain.
I prefer the Telecom Apache keyboard (big flat buttons) to the Vodafone I-Mate K-Jam (small round buttons) since my large thumbs make 10x less typos on the Apache.

That's it really, the OS and apps are similar, I just want a keyboard that fits

Yes, I agree - the Apache keyboard is nicer... But it won't work on the Vodafone network.

So if you poke around the internet you find overseas variants with different keyboards, so the next question is who imports non standard phones into nz? (I've checked pricespy and parallel importers and come back with nothing)

Most of the branded stuff (T-Mobile, O2, Cingular) is SIM locked to the networks. So make sure you don't buy these devices with an operator brand. The only unlocked ones are from i-mate and QTEK, but these share the same keyboards.

I am not aware of parallel importers for Windows Mobile devices. You find these on expansys.com.au and after tax, freight you will find it's more expensive then buying on the street here.

Well that is the next option..
Vodafone want $1400 for a K-Jam
Telecom want $1100 for an Apache and they'll give a $300 trade in on a vodafone phone and charger ("you can buy one for $100 over there" *point to vodafone store* ) and $300 free minutes if you sell your soul for two years

I don't want to change networks, but I do want a nice keyboard.

Change networks...get the Apache...its worth it.

Apache is way faster than K-JAM
Telecom internet speed is way faster than vodaphone and will get even faster mid year.
I've used both..plus you get to keep you old vodafone number say you were 021 123456..when you switch to telecom you'll probably get 0275 123456. only dif is 021 vs 0275.

20 mins sending txt to everyone and they all know your new number...piece of cake

The Telecoms Apache does 802.11B (WEP) while Vodafone's K-Jam does 802.11B &G (WPA), which means as a network weenie, I've gotta go K-Jam for the extra security.

huh? The Apache has WPA on 802.11b.

Why do people assume that WPA is only available on 'G' connections...?

In this case, because when I chimped the Apaches connection settings to the local telecom hotspot, WPA wasn't an option, only NONE and WEP. When I chimped the K-Jam wireless settings across the malls hallway, WPA and WPA-PSK were on the dropdown. The Apache may have WPA on it's 11B, but it aint obvious

In General, 802.11B first came out just with WEP. WPA came along afterwards and was included with 802.11G and retrofitted into existing 802.11B using technomagic like patches and firmware upgrades if the manufacturer felt like it.
There maybe WPA on 11B, but I've only seen Wideopen or WEP on B and WPA-PSK, Serial number filtering, SSID off, on G (just to get access to athe outside of *real* VPN server, that'll let you into the office network) .
