I asked this in a Vodafone thread, but I think the question got lost in it...

I'm thinking of getting a Blackberry 9700, but it doesn't have an FM radio built in like my Nokia 6120 does. The FM radio is something I use a lot on my phone. Is there any sort of dongle or headset or something I can get that allows me to listen to terrestrial FM radio? I know I can stream, but not every station has a stream, and data costs comes into it then.

If so - would such a device support RDS? Not a biggie, but it would be nice to have.

If not - is RIM planning to release a Blackberry in the near future with an FM radio built in?

The phones you listed are "Fakes" - don't go near them or you will have no-end of trouble. The Blackberries don't have FM Radio in them at all.

If you are wanting a good smartphone that can do everything the BB Bold can do (Plus possibly more) I would recommend going towards one of the Android Devices. These offer quite a hefty featurelist for the price. The Samsung GalaxyS has a built in radio, 1GHz Processor, 512mb of Ram and is running Android 2.1 (with 2.2 out now) - It is a really nice phone and also you get quite a heap of phone for the price.

If you are wanting the Blackberry for the same reason I would want one (Ease of use, able to type out messages and emails fast etc) then I don't think you could get a radio on them. Possibly the easiest thing to do is to carry around a small radio with you.

How time changes things...seems the Blackberry OS version 7.1 now includes an FM radio :)

only the curves 9360, 9320 and possibly the 9860 has FM radio chip

bah, I would try and test the FM radio function first before you buy.
Many moons ago I had a few non smartphone nokias which had inbuilt FM tuners and of course only worked with a headset. Signal reception was ok - marginal. With my Xperia S, signal quality is very marginal and when it is good the quality is hampered by interference from I think the phone itself. Once again it uses the headset as the antenna.

Tunein works perfectly if you dont have a built in radio.

Downside though is it uses your data.
