With the rumoured impending release of the Meego platform what does this mean for Symbian 3?

I'm quite keen on the likes of the N8 or more so the E7, however the talk of the N9 with the Meego platform makes the N9 quite tempting.

My thoughts on Symbian 3 is as follows.

From what I have been reading once Meego is released Symbian 3 will be relegated to the cheaper smart phones in the Nokia range.  I still see on going support for Symbian 3 for the medium/long term (mobile phone lifespan wise) for this reason and also continued development of Apps for Symbian 3.  Therefore Symbian 3 will still be a good platform for the next few years.

Meego will bring with it a new level of sophistication to mobile phone operation particularly with what the phone/computer will be able to do. To start with I see the cupboard being a little bare apps wise however I do see that major apps being there from the start.  There seems to be the inference that apps off other platforms will work on Meego.  I've seen the term "cross platform apps" or a comment similar to that used in some articles.  Does this mean that some Android/Windows/iPhone apps might work on Meego?  That would certainly open up the number of apps available and make Meego a very attractive platfrom.

Meego will be on the premium phones at a premium price.  It will offer advantages in functionality but will it be that much better that the likes of the N8 and and E7 etc become completely overshadowed?  My guess is they won't and unless you absolutely need the more powerful functions of Meego or just need to have the latest/biggest/brightest/fastest phone on the street Symbian 3 in the likes of the N8 and E7 will serve you perfectly well.

As for cross platform, it will most like be referring to QT, making apps for Symbian and Meego.

And they aren't referring to it as Symbian^3 anymore, just Symbian.  But I suppose it really depends on what people refer to as high end, I imagine there still be a number of mid range (N8 etc style) Symbian phones being released.

There is a post at the Nokia Conversations site about it.

Sorry, I can't post links

Thanks for that link.  Interesting reading.

It would seem that QT is the key to what development takes place for both Symbian and Meego apps.  I have heard that it is possible to run QT based apps on S60 V5 phones with the correct QT libraries loaded onto the phone.

I think you are right about the cross platform statement applying to Symbian and Meego.  It would certainly seem that Symbian has a fair bit of life in it yet.

It was also interesting to read that Nokia were looking at new IU's for Symbian. That might quieten down some of the critics.

I've just been doing some research on QT.

It appears that an App developed with QT can run on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, Win CE and Mobile, Meego, and Symbian.  It looks to me that you need to have the QT libraries for your operating system installed for things to work, but one version of the app will work on any of these platforms.  Interesting

As a developer myself I can attest to the ease and flexibility of Qt. It's most simply put as C++ with extra APIs you can use to access anything that may be platform or hardware specific (file system, internet, webkit implementation, UI, device sensors, etc). Qt then converts this to native code when you compile your software down. Any developers who move to Qt can simply recompile their software for MeeGo and have their applications ready by launch if they wish, so I wouldn't say that there would be an application void to begin with.

As you mention, Qt is also for computers and some very prominent software has been coded with it:

  • The KDE frontend

  • Google Earth

  • Skype

  • VLC Media Player

  • RealFlow (world leading 3D water simulator, used on Price Caspian, Avatar, Poseidon, etc)

  • The UI of the latest version of Maya (world leading 3D software used in all major movies for special effects)

All of the above (barring KDE of course) have been released for Windows, OS X and Linux. Qt is very clearly a powerful suite which has a lot of support by companies who have every option in the world.

As for Qt libraries, these can be installed along with your application. In the PC world this is simply bundled with your installer; in the Symbian world there is a Smart Installer which automatically checks to see if you have all the required libraries during install and downloads (after confirmation) any you may be missing.

They will need to be recompiled by the developer to run on the different systems. They'll also need tweaks to account for different screen sizes and functionality across platforms but most of that is hidden by the Qt API.

By no means would I classify the N8 as mid range... It is a top line smart phone and is a good contender against the likes of the iphone... and to be honest in my opinion is an iphone killer...

It's classed as high mid tier :)

While it is a fantastic phone, with some wonderful features, I wouldn't call it a top tier phone, we would be waiting on a Meego phone to get those.
