My wife is looking for a new phone with Nokia as the preferred option.  She is dead set on not having a touchscreen phone.  I think a touchscreen would work well for her but she's just not used to using one.

She is keen on a phone with a Qwerty keyboard for inputting appointments/notes etc put wants to retain the abilty of using T9 input (that's the 9 numerical keys) for texting rather than using the Qwerty for texting.

She liked the look of the E75 but when she played with one in the shop she didn't like the loose feel of the
keyboard in the closed position.

Another choice is the E72.  Is it possible to change the settings on a phone like the E72 to allow the use of the 9 number keys for texting instead of having to use the qwerty keys?  There again I think she would get used to using the qwerty text input BUT who am I to argue? :)

Any feedback welcome.

Thanks

No, I dont believe that there is a way, there is on the touchscreen ones however so that might be a way to push her to get one of those.

Another gotcha on the nokias with the qwertys, or touchscreen dialing is the complete lack of letters on the numbers so dialing word numbers is very hard on them. Nokia dont seem to care about that problem either.

On my e63 it has predictive options but thats only for correcting spelling mistakes I think. Its still counted at T9 apparently. My LG KP500 has T9 option with the alpha-numeric keypad, then when you rotate it sideways it turns qwerty but its touch screen.

Yep noticed that on the the likes of the E72 how ever I wasn't aware of this problem on the touch screens as my touchscreen 5800 in portrait mode has the letters on the numbers so word numbers aren't a problem.

Yep just like my 5800.  It works well for me.

The Nokia phones with keyboard have predictive spelling but all use the full keyboard.

We've discussed the issue some more and a touchscreen isn't out of the question now, she likes the handwriting option I have on the 5800, though I'm not sure this works well with capacitive screens.

Press function and hold down the shift key while typing the word number, ie 04IAMCOOL and the phone will automatically convert it when it dials the number.

Yep, that was the problem, she likes the nine number keys for texting as she finds this is faster for her, and I must admit she texts extremely fast, though now we've discussed this some more perhaps as I mentioned above a touchscreen may be OK.  A bit of a learning process for a while though.

Has she ever used a keyboard? I'd be very surprised if she still liked T9 SMS after using a QWERTY keyboard for an hour. IMHO nothing coms close and it's far superior to a touchscreen.

T9 is able to be done one handed, whereas iPhones, and most of the other larger phones like the blackberry like nokias are really 2 handed devices. That makes quite a difference in some situations that you only have one hand free like eating, but not driving since thats not legal anymore.

Tactile buttons mean you dont need to be looking at the display. Proper buttons mean you dont need to look at where your fingers are.

There are situations where I miss the old phone where I could bash out a text in no time with a burger in my other hand.
