My Jasjar used to sync happily with my hp notebook (nx8220), running XP Pro SP2 and all Windows Updates. A month or 2 ago it stopped working. Since then I have reinstalled ActiveSync 4.1, deleted my partnership, removed USB ports from the DeviceManager, turned off power management on USB, checked my firewall settings (Windows firewall is off, ZoneAlarm is configured for ActiveSync to pass through), to my knowledge I have no VPN software installed.

I have exhausted other avenues to resolve this problem:
- Google
- Google groups (http://groups.google.co.nz/group/microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync/msg/c0a6d351ef94e908?&hl=en&q=%22activesync+4.1%22+connection+fails)
- Club i-mate
- Microsoft website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx)
- MSDN

All that happens when I plug in the Jasjar via USB cable to HP is the Microsoft ActiveSync window pops up, saying "Connecting" and spinning the green circle, for ages, until it fails with "Not connected".

I am plugging directly into the laptop USB ports -- all 3 fail. There is no intervening USB hub.

I have tried a soft reset. I dare not do a hard reset -- there is too much data to lose.

Here's the last few lines of WCESMgr.log:

And in my ActiveSync.log the only obvious error (which may not be significant) I can see is:

1: RegisterSerialUSB: SetupDiGetDeviceRegistryProperty failed with last error of 13

That file ends with:

successfully.

I have just downloaded and installed ActiveSync 4.2 beta (from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync42.mspx) and installed it, after uninstalling 4.1, of course. It installed ok. But when I run it, there is still no connection.

One thing I noticed is that there is no app firing up on the PDA when trying to connect. I recall that there used to be an animated icon on the PocketPC indicating it was trying to link to the PC. But that is missing. When I fired up ActiveSync on the PDA and press Sync it momentarily displays "Connecting" and stops.

Still no joy. But I'm suspecting something on the Jasjar is wrong.

If you want to make sure its not a hardware (jasjar) issue try connecting it to another PC

Good idea, johnr. I tried on another machine here (an older IBM laptop). It failed in the same way. Makes me suspect the Jasjar has something missing or configured incorrectly?

What software is meant to fire up automatically on the PocketPC, when ActiveSync starts running on the desktop PC?

Sorry I don't use windows mobile I like symbian for mobile and windows for my laptop

I suggest you perform a Clear Storage action on your Jasjar. You will have to recreate the patnership and reinstall programs though.

Tap Start / Programs to find the Clear Storage program.

ClearStorage looks like it will have much the same effect as a hard reset? That is not something I'm prepared to do until I can figure out a way of backing up my data. How do I achieve that without using ActiveSync?

I guess I have to copy all my data files to my 128MB storage card. Any gotchas around that?

Your PIM data is safe on Outlook. As for other files, you can copy any file you need to a SD card. This does not need ActiveSync and should be a good backup.

I got the same problme with my O2 XDA Executive and Gateway P4 laptop.  let me know if anything works... I'll keep u informed as well.

Why would the PIM data be safe? Surely a hard reset (or Clear Storage) should turn the device back to the factory settings and erase all Outlook data -- so that you don't have to individually delete every Contact, Appointment, etc.? Is the PIM data stored in one file?

That assumes that you have been keeping the Outlook synchronisation up-to-date, and haven't added/changed lots of Outlook data between the last successful sync and actually getting around to do something about your PDA.

True. But you should treat the Outlook .pst file or the Exchange mailbox as the central repository for your PIM, and the PDA as the replication of this data.

That's good in theory. But many people (myself included) have Outlook at home and at work. What is on my PDA is an amalgam of the contents of both. So neither PST file is a "master" in that sense.

I realise that that is not a problem in itself. The problem is when I add data to Outlook, via the PDA, and ActiveSync is not working.

So which file on my PocketPC is the equivalent of a PST file?

There is a PIM file in the root folder. The problem is that if you copy this file (which may be one of many you ned to copy) and restore it after a hard reset then you will get duplicate items or have items deleted when you establish a new partnership.

The good news is that you were right. The ClearStorage did enable me to ActiveSync again. (Yippee!)

The better news is that copying the pim file to storage card and back DID preserve all my Outlook data. I don't think the data is doubled up (well, that used to happen all the time anyway). Oh except for my files -- I have 2 copies of my Notes now, but that is easy to sort out.

My similiar problem was recently resolved by doing a hard reset as well.!!! LOL
Now things are goin real well.
As a matter of interest I see a reference in this thread to active sync 4.2.
I followed the link but was wandering what the improved features might be of this version.
