As you might have noticed in other threads, i'm trying to figure out getting a PDA/Cellphone.

I'm still confused about some things, more to do with Vodafone at the moment.

I understand you can't have a data plan on prepay, so I assume I will have to move to a plan. This is kinda a bummer, I call much, mainly text so this isn't ideal. Are there any cheap plans that include some data?

Also, the data only plans, other than being rediculously expensive, half of them don't seem to even cover the amount of data that the 'heartbeat' for the Direct Push. How can they possible offer a 3MB plan if that isn't even going to cover the data the phone uses by itself? This basically means your up to the 50MB plan if you want to do anything other than the heartbeat and your paying $40 + GST a month straight away.

However, what i find even stranger, is that the vodafone website doesn't even MENTION this usage of data. It is not described anywhere and the data usage calculators certainly don't take it into account, what is going on?

One other thing, I believe in the review of AKU2 you mentioned you can change the regularity of checks. Was the data usage (15-20MB) you mentioned using the default interval or your custom one of every half an hour?
Is it also feasible to reduce the checking to once an hour as well? This would immediately half the data usage and would be nice.

There is however a possiblility, for me at least.
I'm at home about half the time, say 12 hours a day.

If it is easy (preferably automatically so i don't forget) to use my home wifi for the connection then this could also halve the usage. I could then probably get away with the 15MB/month plan and only pay about $22/month.

I still don't understand how they can offer a 3MB plan though. Even using the lower end of all your estimates with the way I would connect the phone (15MB's a month / 2 for checking every hour /2 for being at home half the time = 3.75MB) is greater than 3MBs!

Crazy!

one other thing, I have heard you have to get a new number if you change from prepay to plan?

is this true? i can't think of any reason why this would be neccersary. :S

Thanks.
Peter

Peter there are many technical reasons why at this time you can't take your mobile number from prepay to on Acc and vice versa

Also if you want mobile data vodafone offer 1G for $49 and you don't have to sign a contract term and this can be loaded onto any on account MSISDN.

When Vodafone put out their data plans there was no direct push e-mail for Windows Mobile devices. There was no way to Vodafone to know how much data would be needed.

Since then they came out with a very good plan, $49/month for 1GB (gigabyte) of traffic. I think you should consider this plan.

Yes, you can change the heartbeat, but you have to be the Exchange Administrator.

Not everyone does what you want to do. Some GPRS devices are merely dataloggers, e.g. a temperature monitoring station in a hothouse etc...

went to vodafone on friday to have a look at the Jamin.
also talked to the guy about the data plans etc.

His response was to say I should get a Blackberry if I want push email because the i-mate phones aren't really designed for it.

thought that was an interesting response...

Load of rubish, really. I wanted to know how my i-mate Jasjar, the old i-mate Pocket PC Phone and the Apache work with push e-mail then...
