Hey guys,
when using an HTC Apache's 'Wireless Modem' feature, how does one dial and connect?
Is it similar to GPRS where you dial *99# and connect with PPP over the Bluetooth/IrDA link?

Yes, you connect via Bluetooth or IrDA via PPP. However on Bluetooth you simply need to use the DUN service and on your laptop/desktop it will ask for number, username and password. You will use #777, username mobile@jamamobile, password telecom.

With Bluetooth you don't need to run WMODEM. For USB connections though you need to run WMODEM and install this driver.

Thanks for the advice but It's not working :-(
I am able to use a terminal emulator from my Linux Laptop over IrDA (/dev/ircomm0) and I have setup PPP correctly according to http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/03/08/2138237

But, when I open the terminal emulator and type ATZ, ATD, ATI or any AT command it just says 'OK'. There is also no terminal echo at all. What (secret?) AT command do I need to send to start PPP?

Is there a reference available to the AT command set used by Windows Mobile 5 / HTC Apache ?

That is correct there is no echo from the Apache (other than 'OK') when using a terminal emulator, dont ask me why. In 'tethered' data mode the Apache relies in the IP stack in the PC. Dialing #777 is enough to kick off PPP from the network perspective. Are you running the 'wireless modem' program in the Apache?

Jama: dialing #777 doesn't start PPP on my Apache. Do i need to send anything other than ATZ to initalise?
I have tried ATD#777 and ATDT#777

And yes I have run the wireless modem application, selected IrDA and clicked Start
