Ok, I recently purchased a 4155 (New to PDA and a complete newbie). I have a few questions...

Question 1:

I changed the default partnership name from Pocket_PC to another name that contained an underscore. Which from other forums this is not good to do since some backup utilities will not work with partnership names that contain underscores.

So I want to know how the best way to change this partnership in my pocket PC and on my system in so that syncing will still work and I wont loose anything? If there is no easy way to do this, what do you all recommend?

Question 2:

Recently the desktop system that contains my sync software for my pocket PC is not doing well and requires me to do a format and re-install of XP. How do I go about syncing from Pocket PC to desktop PC once I have the system back up and running? I would assume to install sync software again, but do I set up a partnership? Will everything from the pocket PC get updated to the Desktop PC?

I also thought this would be the perfect time to change the partnership name, I found the following site but wasnt sure if I should try it:

http://pocketprof.org/device_names_...ting_partne.htm

If it would work, then do I assume if once I install the sync software on my desktop PC, hook up my pocket PC in the cradle, go through the set-up steps, name the partnership with the new name (recently changed on the Pocket PC) it would recognize the partnership and update the desktop PC? (these are just educated assumptions, but if someone could confirm them I would be more likely to try it)

Again, I apologize in advance for asking some very newbie questions, but I would really appreciate any ideas, suggestions, comments, etc. Thanks!

As you have noticed the Activesync (Microsoft) software is not as smart as the Hotsync (Palm) in terms of recovery when a device fails.

To change a name what I've done was:

  • Perform a last synchronisation
  • Remove the Pocket PC from cradle
  • On ActiveSync delete the partnership but keeping the My documents folder!
  • Rename the Pocket PC
  • Create a new partnership
  • Copy the files you had before from your old My Documents folder to the new one - this will restore everything into your Pocket PC.

Regarding your second question, yes, you'll have to create the partnership again - make sure that you have a backup of all programs you have - you don't need to reinstall again on your Pocket PC, unless a conduit is installed on ActiveSync (like WorldMate does).
