I'm thinking on getting a device for e-mailing on the go etc. I'm not really sure which device would be best, so if someone could make a recommendation based on the following it would be much appreciated.

Requirements:
EV-DO or UTMS Enabled
WiFi Enabled

Ablility to check for and download messages from POP server (leaving messages on server and not automatically downloading attachments)
Ability to send email via SMTP

Should be able to recognise when in range of my WiFi network and use this in preference to the Cellular network

Small enough to fit comfortably in my pocket

Ability to plug into my laptop for internet access.

Tricky - no such thing currently as auto sensing and switching between cellular and mobile networks. Any other Windows Mobile device will fit the bill like the Telecom Apache.

I have been seriously looking at apache but I am put off that arial and it is a touch bigger than I would like. I also like that it is EV-DO which is faster and has better pings, but little roaming

Whoops - I meant to say handover between cellular and WiFi networks...

You are correct not much roaming on the Apache but great speed, etc. It depends on what you want really. The antenna doesn't really worry me I find the Apache is reliable.

JasJar has no external ariel right? If so I think I would lean that way. What is it like in size vs. Apache?

All Windows Mobile 5.0 devices recognise when in range of a previously connected Wireless LAN access point and will automatically use the cheaper network to access the Internet.

if you like the apache go for it! the vodafone version (K-jam) is slower all round (processor and cellular data). I have had an apache since they came out and really you get used to the bulk.

I have had a go with both and altought the k-jam is slightly smaller I found it a lot less responsive also.

You should also take into consideration 3G coverage in your area (of primary use), and Telecom's more extensive 3G EVDO / nation wide 1XRTT data network, and the faster speeds currently on offer.

The Apache is a nice improvement on the Harrier, smaller, WiFi, 1.3MP Camera and running windows mobile 5.0. Having an aerial is a small price to pay for these features (when comparing to a Harrier). Also comes with a spear battery, which is handy.

In regard to roaming, while the apache may not be able to roam to as many places as its Vodafone competitors, don't discard WiFi networks overseas, which will be far cheaper than overseas data rates anyway. In short use WiFi where you can, unless you wish to take up the current $49+GST 1GB data plan offer (now available for use on selected smart phones with Telecom, under the revised terms of the extended offer) for nation wide access.

Sorry, Jama, you are incorrect.

That is not what I said. There is no automatic IP handover between WiFi and cellular. You as the user choose the cheaper network not the device.

There's no IP handover, but if the device has cellular data and wireless LAN both available it will first use wireless LAN for IP communications - except if you have Direct Push enabled, which will only work over cellular data networks.

Exactly. Even though I can happily roam (data) with my Jasjar while in the USA, and I can also roam with my Apache in Australia, I wouldn't do it. Vodafone charges $30/MB while overseas using a non-Vodafone network, while Telecom charges $8/MB on roaming partner networks. If you can't find a cafe with free Wi-Fi you can always go to McDonald's and pay $1.50/hour and have Wi-Fi almost anywhere in the USA.

So -it looks like Jasjar versus Apache!!

By the looks the Jasjar is bulkier than the Apache?-then I use a Solid aluminium aircraft grade case, and its worth its weight in gold as its saved it a few times now.

I have the Jasjar and it does as mentioned go for wifi if available 1st
Easy email set up for Pop access.

I still feel I am leaning towards VF. If I do decided to go that way do you think I should wait until VF rolls out their Next Gen data network with better speeds?
