K, some of you know I've got an i-Mate SP5.

I've got a 1gb MiniSD card in there but one of the problems I've been having is storage. Everything defaults to the main memory. Some app's can be installed to storage, but the Temporary Internet Files, Java Midlets etc all go to main memory.

After some searching, here's your fixes. These are tested OK on the SP5 running WM2005, however will probably work on just about any SmartPhone.

1) Install unsigned applications. Requires registry editing.
I found the original information on various boards, but theres a blog here that has the full information.
Includes links to regeditstg (htc signed registry editor), and SDA application unlocker.
Link: http://blogs.conchango.com/stuartpreston/archive/2005/11/10/2376.aspx

2) Move Temporary Internet Files to Storage Card
Credit where due (the modaco forums have some excellent stuff.
I used the manual registry method, but now I search there appears to be a small app to do it for you.
App Method: http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=231188&st=0
Registry Method: http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=242496

3) Move Java Midlets onto Storage Card
Once again - modaco. Note: when moving the Tao folder to the storage card I found I had to do it using the Mobile Device Explorer from the PC end. The built in File Manager was having an error moving the rofs_target.zip files.
Link: http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=244200

Another useful little app while doing all this rebooting is PhoneReboot
Link: http://www.modaco.com/index.php?automodule=downloads&showfile=1559

Also finally another couple of useful little apps (requires unlocking for unsigned applications - AutoKeylock & m2simcopy
The SP5 can be keylocked by holding down the end key but this is a bit annoying and you dont' always remember. AutoKeylock avoids this issue and also has some quite nifty options you can enabled on the screensaver layouts.

m2simcopy allows you to copy all contacts from your Sim into the phones Contact Database.

After years of faithful allegiance to palm, I have just pensioned off my kyocera 7135 (already missing it heaps despite the size) and splashed out on an imate smartflip. I have been looking at lots of forums and coming to the conclusion that it is very useful to be able to control memory as per jpwise's post above. Also it seems to me that a lot of good software would be precluded from being used if the phone is not application unlocked. But I am a tad nervous about doing this. What is the general feeling from forum members. Is unlocking as per instructions above an easy task? or something with big risks etc. What are the pros and cons. I figured that with a brand new 'empty' phone... now is the best time to do this sort of thing as I've got next to no data to lose, on the other hand I need to find instructions of one syllable to help me thru all this as I am no 'mod' or 'tweak' expert. Imate fans - what applications (freeware is good but I don't my paying) do you recommend as great to have? Disappointingly clubimate is still in its infancy and the forums don't have that much info. So looking for yr help, and hopefully it will help other newbies too Cheers Sam

You don't risk anything by unlocking the phone to allow applications to be installed. The problem is that the tools listed may not work on your Smartflip. AFAIK, i-mate have released unlock tools before, for their other models. You could check on www.clubimate.com to see if there's an unlock tool for your Smartflip already.

As Mauricio mentioned you don't risk anything unlocking it, you just need to be more aware of what applications you install. Unsigned applications might have bugs, or incompatibilities with the device.  On the other hand they may be the kind of thing you'd use every day. I've added a link to AutoKeylock in the first post. It's another one I'd class as must have since iMate don't appear to include the facility from factory.

Also on a sidenote, if you have any major issues the http://www.imateforum.com site has alot more people (with knowledge too) than the clubimate forum itself does. At least from what I"ve seen so far.

PS: If you've only just got the unit check for an apply any firmware updates now. I've only just updated mine to the latest firmware and you need to back 'everything' up first. The firmware update wipes everything in main memory.

If you need to back up/restore SMS's the Jeyo Mobile Extender works well, but it's a pay product. Also when you restore them into the phone they all appear to Unread so you have to go through and mark them read again. :/

Thanks guys for above help and confidence boost, I am looking forward to giving the above a go to teh letter. I had not heard of the other imate site before so that advice is esp helpful. Incidentally, I did try VF NZ seeing as I bought phone off them but all I got was an 0800 number for imate that no longer works (it was 0800447805) , and the retail shop and 777 staff weren't much help either, as for the instant messaging support system that club imate has - It took me 6 "timed out" attempts before I got through. And the guy said that the NZ smartflips were completely unlocked for acceptng any applications which can't be right as I can't see why anyone would go thru the effort referred to in the forums etc if the phone is already unlocked :-) ! Thks J

AFAIK the SP5 was locked, and the smartflip looks like as well. I don't understand the reasoning on why locking Smartphones but leaving Pocket PCs unlocked.

Perhaps he was thinnking of SIM lock (network lock) instead?

Here's an update on where I got to with my smartflip..yes I did ask the i-mate guy whether he was confused with SIM unlocking and he said no, the phone was definitely application unlocked. I can now confirm that's not correct because when I followed jp's steps above, I initially inadvertently tried to run the SDA unlocker before the regedit and of course got the error message saying that the phone was application locked and the unlocker can't be run. Anyway all went well, once i did the regedit first and then the sda unlocker. I then tried the manual method to move the internet cache to my 2Gb card... first thing i noticed is that the file path referred to in the modaco site was different from where the cache was on my smartflip, anyway i boxed on .. but discovered it made no difference - my cache continue to populate my phone, and no new folders were created on the storage card. i reversed all my changes and then tried the app method ... that hasn't work either. So I have abandoned any changes at this stage as i still have 18-20Mb phone space so not an issue for now. If another smartflip owner succeeds in making the above work let us know how you did it. Incidentally, i searched for unlocker software on the clubi-mate site and could not find an "official" one. And imate forum site only had links to the the one jp listed above. I have not done the key lock tweak as that would be redundant feature for a clam type phone ! I have since loaded p-tab, smartphone notes and orneta txt editor to help me cope with withdrawal systems from my previous use of palm docs to go software. Have tried all 3 that I bought ...and can vouch that they do what I need quite well, and supplement the read only clearvue software.

When I did the IE Temp file move I reset the phone (ensure nothing else is running in background). Did the registry hack, then reset the phone again, and then started Pocket IE. After that used explorer to goto the storage card and all was well.

Did you do the reset steps in between?  Also out of curiosity what was the existing locate specified for Temporary Internet Files?

You will find the path is different depending on some OEM settings.

You will also find that there's a bug (already talked about with Microsoft MED) that Internet Explorer Mobile does not respect some settings - sooner or later it will reset to using the internal memory for cache, and even if you limit the cache size through some registry keys it will soon overwrite these values with some absurdly high number.

hrm.. hadn't heard that one yet, but it doens't hugely suprise me.
I haven't limited cache size yet becuse it's on a 1gb mini-sd, so plenty of space for the moment.

Altho I will have to find out if there's any way to get Google Mobile Maps to cache the data to file. It appears to cache it all to memory currently, so whenever you force a close & re-open it has to download it all over again.

Hi jpwise, I did not reset between each step - I told you I needed blow by blow instructions, doh :-), so that might have been the problem, anyhow I won't retry for now as it's not too inconvenient to clear the temp files periodically for now. BTW, the default location for the temp files on the smartflip was \windows\profiles\guest\temporary internet files. Thanks all.

Hrm. That location does ring a bell. Altho I can't remember what mine was before I changed it.  : )

I must say though I am loving having google mobile maps going. It was a pig to bully it into going, but it's probably going to be one of the more useful things on my phone. Especially when I'm out of town and need to find an address. :)
