In my opinion Microsoft has just killed Windows Phone with this gem:

The update, available to all carriers that request it,

This for update 8107...

What Microsoft said last year regarding updates was that a carrier can refuse the first update but they cannot refuse the second update. NoDo took a while to be deployed and not every carrier approved of it whereas Mango was deployed within 2 months to every handset out there and none of the carriers could refuse it. With the Tango update coming sometime before March 2012, I believe Microsoft's thinking is that if carriers refuse this 8107 update, Microsoft do not need carrier approval for the Tango update to be deployed to Windows Phone handsets if carriers refuse it. Just a thought...

Yes, they said that (and I expanded in my blog). But somehow I think this will slip...

Seriously, have been on this for ten years now, since Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Edition, Windows Mobile, etc.

The customer was always the operator, never the end user.

I don't think so it was removed due to bad feedback. I have seen many posts on windowsteamblog.com that had recieved bad feedback like when Drive Extender was removed from WHS 2011 but the post still stayed on the website.

The Chevron WP7 member who was one of the 3 members to jailbreak Windows Phone has said it right about today's post/fiasco

"Mobile operators have always had the ability to request/not-request Windows Phone updates."

http://windowsphonesecrets.com/2010/11/11/the-truth-about-windows-phone-7-software-updates-and-carriers-ability-to-block-those-updates/

I believe the author of today's post on windowsteamblog.com was not correct with his words which is why the people took/understood the situation regarding the updates the wrong way.

Like I also said earlier, the carriers can only refuse one update but the second update will be released regardless of carrier's yes or no. I don't mind this as long as the major updates like mango, tango or apollo are not delayed which is why I believe Microsoft is probably smart releasing minor updates in between the major one's as a way around the carriers approvals for the major one's.

I am pretty sure that within few hours, Microsoft will release another post on windowsteamblog.com and clarify the situation a lot more clearer.

edit - it's actually still there.

I'm curious about unlocked phones. I haven't been able to find anything about this.

When MS mention carriers, is it your network carrier that allows updates, or because it's an unlocked phone it will be updated as MS roll it out around the globe?

Well, it looks like MS will roll out updates to unlocked phones at its discretion. I'm currently updating my HTC Radar to 8107 as we speak after receiving the notification this arvo.

I have three here - one with my personal number, one that's for home use only (WiFi, no SIM), one for testing.

Perhaps you should create a new topic on this to poll?

Got the update the other week...

turns out a mate of mine recently purchased a trophy, and had never even plugged it into their computer.

I nearly cried, it was... no updates at all. D:

STILL waiting for internet sharing.
