I checked on Wises.co.nz - that had a more straight forward journey. London Road - Hutt Road.

I was just in Lower Hutt, never go there, so I had with me my Nokia. I was in London Road I took the exit off the motorway into Petone by mistake b/c it didn't tell me either to keep going or take the left exit. So I was on London Road and it said keep going up that road for 15mins ... and back down might have been London Road again .... then it was a short drive to Hutt Road. What ..... So did my Nokia asked me to do a full circuit instead of a u-turn??

After reading that I'm just as confused as your phone probably was.

You took the offramp at Petone station and it directed you up London Rd rather than turning right to head over to Petone?

I was going towards the Hutt. It didn't tell me whether to keep going or take the left motorway exit into Petone. I thought I had to take the exit from past experience. Took that. Wrong choice. Then ... maybe I got a bit lost. I drove a bit around maybe I was going up this hill and I saw the street sign "London Road", the Nokia told me to keep driving up that road. I did a full circuit back down, then onto Hutt Road.

Don't know. Last time I used a TomTom it avoided u-turns preferring a circle route.

If I remember correctly there was an exception when parked on the opposite side of the road, it would just show the shortest route - effectively a U-turn. Not actually an exception, just different when the vehicle is stationary.

When moving it is just a safe default to avoid blaming the gps for insane last second turn accidents.

That might make sense then. Up the hill from London Road was pretty much just that. There is not much where you can go around a block and come back around quickly ...

I read that in the USA at least, that maybe it is illegal to do u-turns ... ? Unless it says you are allowed to.
