I am in Melbourne for a week or so starting next week. I have hurt my back which means that if it doesn't heal quickly, I will be limited in the amount of stuff I was originally going to do and may need to rest.

I am wondering what options I have for remote gaming when I am away . I have a PS4 and Xbox One X (which are staying at home) and am taking a laptop with me.

I am thinking perhaps the latency will be a deal breaker?

Something like the Nintendo Switch sounds ideal for this situation.

Would have thought that Australian internet would be the biggest deal breaker for gaming over there.

A switch sounds interesting, however that's an expensive device for use for a week. I wouldn't use it any other time.

Especially if it doesn't mean to you have to buy something to do it,.

Netflix/TV/Movies for a week if you have a backlog. Otherwise low spec gaming on the laptop like Salt & Sanctuary/Hollow Knight etc.

If you have a TV at your accommodation and your back isn't too buggered to carry the PS4 + games I'd say take it with you as carry on. If digital be sure to patch everything before you go offline.

Even if you don't have a TV, if you have access to LAN you can remote play on your laptop. PS4 can go headless (test this before you go) and you can just remote in like you normally would. Only issue is you have to carry both laptop and PS4 :)

Whats the laptops specs?
I know you are an ITPro so probably already know the laptop can't game, But minecraft is a good game and can run on lower spec machines!

I was really hoping to play the games on my Xbox and PS4 without taking them.

It's not a massive problem either way, was just looking for a nice easy solution.

You wouldn't happen to be attending PAX in Melbourne next week as well, would you? :D

If you are then they've apparently got dedicated console/PC spaces at PAX that are available for anybody to play. I'm personally bringing my Nintendo Switch along, but won't probably game much as I'll be attending the panels and exploring Melbourne. Sorry to hear about your back though.

I think your laptop should be fine. Stream movies, play PC games. Perhaps mobile games?

I have a capable Note 9 for gaming if I want to, I just have a back log of games and also RDR2 is coming out when I am away.

No I am not at PAX, I am attending SMBPro.

I'm staying with a friend whose finally gotten FTTC, and now has 100mbit VDSL instead of <8mbit ADSL1 with copper backhaul (saturated at peak times).

Alternatively I hear pubs have comfortable seating and may offer the 'rest' you require.

To be honest if it's nbn then he probably gets congested anyway. I have a mate with the same 'upgrade' you described he gets 10Mb/s during peaks. Still an improvement over the 6Mb/s adsl he had before but just shows how nbn will keep being the butt of jokes in oceania for years to come.
