sonic1989: I totally understand where some people are coming from and specially with past experiences such as RROD or YLOD. However, I believe that there was a huge improvement from ps360 era to current generation of consoles in terms of reliability and I am counting on both companies to improve on this even more. In addition, if people are going to be paranoid over things like these and stop them from purchasing consoles and enjoying entertainment, then I don't think it's worth it, but that's just my opinion. plus there's always an option of purchasing an extended warranty as an option to give piece of mind. I say get what you get and enjoy life as no body knows what's going to happen the next day. we could live/die/get sick so best to enjoy what you enjoy while you can physically socially mentally and financially 🙂

Well said mate.
Just an aside, extended warranties aren't really required. Just use CGA.
Love the attitude!

rodimus: From PlayStation twitter account [https://mobile.twitter.com/PlayStation/status/1307364082341740544]

“ Let’s be honest: PS5 preorders could have been a lot smoother. We truly apologize for that.

Over the next few days, we will release more PS5 consoles for preorder – retailers will share more details.

And more PS5s will be available through the end of the year.”

I saw that too - it was on a US website and was referring to how pre-orders were handled by US retailers. I don’t believe it was relevant to NZ and the rest of the world.

@ Leatheryhawkeye

My bad, I thought it was possible to get an extended warranty with consoles like with other appliances. I wouldn't know as I never got one with PS3/4 so was kinda of thinking to get one with the PS5. Since I got my pre-ordered secured via EB games, I'll see what options they have, if any anyway.

Technically they said the 17th and seeing as it was the 17th when we watched the event nobody jumped the gun. We really didn't get any notice here though, the broadcast ended and before you knew it the likes of mightyape had the pre-orders up and were sold out. Just would have been handy to give those that wanted one a bit more notice and maybe have said 9am on the Friday so they could actually plan to try and reserve one.

Many people guessed what might happen here and had a plan to act quickly - and were successful. If Sony had said “9am Friday” there would still have been a rush  - probably much more of a rush. Many buyers would still have missed out on the limited Day 1 allocations - nothing would really have changed.

It is possible there's just no point in NZ as we have consumer protection by law

All good mate - I'm sure you are right and you can get extended warranties with consoles.

Consumer org have found the warranties to not be terribly great value. I'm just saying we have strong consumer rights here and exercising them is much better value than purchasing additional (and unnecessary) warranty periods.
Hope that makes sense!
I'm not worried about failure particularly but a poster on here suggested we should be concerned, but my only evidence of lack of failures was anecdotal (i.e. my own history of Playstation purchases)

@cshwone Just read your post in another thread about the height of the PS5 - thought you might be interested in this. Are you referring to its height when sitting vertically or horizontally?

Thanks, Vertical. Good to see that it can sit horizontally but looks awful.

At first I thought I agreed with you on the horizontal appearance - but thinking again I don’t think it looks too bad. Overall I really like the novel shape. Mine will probably be horizontal. I think the vertical orientation is not particularly friendly for people with entertainment units.

Hi guys,

I am a bit confused with all the information regarding the TV situation surrounding the launch of the PS5.

I understand that the games for PS5 will be backwards compatible to full HD TVs, but I am planning on upgrading my TV anyway.

Do I have to get an HDMI 2.1 compatible TV to take advantage of gaming on a 4K TV, or will any 4K TV do the job? If it's the former, how do I find TVs with this functionality?

Cheers

I’m in the same position too and managed to find this information: https://reddit.com/r/bravia/comments/ivyr14/_/g5utmi9/?context=1

In short, depends on your use case and you are probably not missing out on much.

any 4K tv would be fine for the ps5 , you’ll need hdmi 2.1 for higher refresh rates and variable refresh rates if you want those features probably won’t be too many games that will have those features at the beginning of the ps5 life if you want to future proof get a tv with hdmi 2.1 but will be fine with any 4K tv

If you want to get the most out of your console over its lifetime, then a HDMI 2.1 TV will probably help.

Some games have already announced that they will support 120fps in multiplayer.

It is just the start of the generation. In 2 - 3 years more single player games might be pushing 120fps if it helps them tell new and interesting stories.

Also it allows for Variable refresh rate which is supposed to make a big difference.

This time next year, a lot more TV's will probably be HDMI 2.1.

Thanks for the awesome answers everyone!

How do I go about finding a HDMI 2.1 4K TV? Can't seem to find a good place that states it in the specs. Are they quite rare at the moment? Don't wanna be spending too much on the new setup haha
